hi folks,
please take a look at the bass i recently bought from guitar center. from what i can tell from the serial number, its probably a 1976. but i was surprised to find an illegible stamp on the base of the neck.

additionally, the body must have been stripped/varnished. my question is - can anyone help me identify what this bass looked like originally? as in, what fender finish was originally on the guitar? and also, whether or not those are original pots. they are very scratchy and i should have them replaced.
thanks very much.

Interesting bass.
IMHO you can't tell how it was finished originally because all signs of the original finish have been removed from the body cavities, as far as I can tell,

But you can guess that is was a transparent finish that was popular in 1976. These would be Sunburst, natural, brown or red all of which were transparent because you have a nicely figured ash body and that is likely what they would have finished this bass in.

I don't think that the pots are original, but it is hard to tell from these pictures. You know that the pickup is not original and the knobs are replacements.

Have fun with your bass.

I like the finish! Now all you gotta do is replace the pickup (unless you're into actives). I'm interested to read what BroDave writes about this one.

thanks very much. yes i am looking to get those EMG's outta there! not a fan of active pickups. i also like the natural finish, but would be interesting to look into the cost/feasibility of restoration. would anyone have the official pantone code for the mocha brown finish?

yes it is a fun bass to play. there is a little buzz near the tuners in the headstock, but i will check that out for maintenance. im stringing her up with some flatwounds and getting the bridge & pickup covers for the original look. i believe the pickguard may be original. or at least it's fender parts if not original.

if there's anyone who might be able to decipher the neck stamp, that would be great. it's just so worn out over the years that i dont even know what i'm looking at.

from this site, "neck stamps explained", http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html

here's what i believe the neck stamp says:

01 06 4883.

or if i use X to mark where my guesses are i'd say 0X 06 4XX3

01 makes sense for being a P-bass

the next 2 digits are 06, which is weird because i would expect to see 01 or 03 there. My bass has a skunk stripe neck.

the next 2 digits really arent that important but if i had to guess it would be 48, for 48th week of the year. which is november/december.

the 7th digit i would expect to be a 6 in order to correspond to 1976, which is then the 76 serial number necks were produced. would it make sense at all to have an 8 in there? This would only happen if the headstock decal was applied when the neck was manufactured in 1976 and stamped on the heel in 1978 when it was assembled.

lastly, the 8th digit, it looks like a 3 for wednesday.
there is another green mark to the right which looks like a "1" in a bigger font.
