I've purchased a badass II for my P-bass. I'm ready to install, but the package recommends to take to a professional to file the string grooves in the saddles. Should I really take this to a shop, or is this something that I can accomplish myself? If it can be done myself, I'm looking for any advice or tips on how to best do the filing. Thanks!

I installed a Badass II on my new Precision Special about four months ago using the instructions I found online at
http://www.thebigdark.com/blog/archives ... g_a_ba.php. I thought cutting the grooves would be tricky, but it turned out to be pretty easy once I made the measurements and marked everything off clearly (and bought a good file).

I haven't had any problems or had to make any adjustments since then, so probably you could do the same (I'm not terribly mechanically inclined, and if I can do it ...)

Worst case, of course, you can take the Badass off and put the stock bridge back on --- but I'd go ahead and give it a shot.

Thats a BadAss III, they only fit the modern American Basses (note the 3 screw holes, the other 4 are for string though body). If you have a 5 screw bridge this will not suit. BUT the saddles may fit, if you're willing to buy a whole new bridge. lol.

I would just buy the slotted version. I have two of them, one on my Jazz that I built and another on my HW1 Precision. Both of them allow for a god degree of changes to your string spacing and saves the hassle of filing the bridge.

However there is an advantage to filing that you get what you want.

FWIW, in the past year and a half the BAII has also been made available pre-slotted to the GP. Like on the Dirnt basses, and the HWY1's. So you can get both a pre-slotted BAII or III.

Also, Yes, BAIII's are only for the AS Basses and the other STB basses. (51Ri's, Sting's, CS 55's, Frank Bello, and original run Single COil 50's P's, and old Telecaster basses.)

Hi I just installed a Badass 2 on my ´62 re-issue precision. At first I thought that it´s going to be difficult the whole thing was very easy you should have no problems with it!! Firstly remove the strings and the stock bridge then use the screws that came with the Badass Bridge (do not use the stock screws from the old bridge) when you mounted the bridge then check the string height ... tune you´re bass after that there will be some fret buzzing at the 17th fret that´s normal. Use a small screwdriver and make some tunings on the Badass bridge. When you get over the fret buzzing and the strings are not too high then you got everything right and you´re ready to rock :)

I just installed a BAII on my MIM Jazz Bass. I'm leaving mine un-grooved. I have read that it is common with the BAII to leave the saddles un-grooved and it still plays great.

I really love the new Badass bridge I think that´s the only modification that should be made on fender bass.I added the bridge coz I made a replica of the bass that Cone McCaslin (Sum41) plays. (olympic white ´62 re-issue P-bass ,a custom black pickguard (with holes for a thumbrest) and a Badass 2 Bridge) It turned out very sweet it looks cool the action is great and the most important thing is that it plays and sounds like a dream. Honestly this the best bass that I ever had and with this bridge I re-invented my beautiful bass. Everyone get a Badass 2 !!

Chet, I left mine ungrooved due to installing the 9050m at the same time - 9050 is flat wound. The tech told me that's common practice with flat wounds. So far, no issues for me.

I have to say putting the BA III on my '87 transformed it too. I did the bridge and the pups at the same time tho, so the pup might also have a lot to do with it on top of the new bridge.

I would try it ungrooved first. I adjusted the string hei a little and that is it. Plays great, dead on it on the 12th fret, no buzzing on the 15th or 17th.
