I haven't been able to find a single replacement pickguard for the dual humbucking pickups of a Blacktop P-bass, so I was wondering if the standard single coil pickguard will fit?

I can't tell exactly, but it looks like all the screws are in identical places, except for those around the pickups. Also, are the length of the pickups the same? It looks to me like the two single coils can fit into the one hum bucking pickup, so I would just have to carve out the extra space.

I want this pick guard: http://phousemusic.com/index.php?main_p ... age&pID=44

On this guitar: http://www.sweetwater.com/images/closeu ... K_body.jpg

Unless there are pre made pick guards for the blacktop, what's the best way to do this?

Thanks much!

No. Blacktop P-Bass pickguards are routed to accommodate a double humbucking Jazz Bass pickup. Standard P-Bass guards are designed to fit a split-coil humbucking pickup.

In order to get a replacement pickguard you must send the original to a custom maker (see the links above) as a template for the custom replacement.

None of those sites have blacktop pick guards.

I understand that, my question is if it's possible to cut out the necessary area around the single coils to fit the humbucking pickup, if the dimensions are the same.

Unless the hardware is attached to the pickguard?

The pickguard will fit the bass body but not the pickup, plus screw holes above the pickups will have to be added. You can try to modify a stock guard to fit, but I don't guarantee you'll like the result unless you are highly skilled at pickguard crafting. A custom guard copying yours as Chromeface suggested would be the only surefire thing.

Just remove the stock guard, put it over the replacement and trace the changes onto the replacement and hack away. It sounds doable, but your skill and the quality of the tools available will determine the result. This material cracks easily under stress so work carefully!
