Feel matters a great deal to me. If it doesn't feel right, I won't enjoy playing it. You can always change the sound by installing different pickups, strings, etc but it is difficult if not impossible to change the feel. Personally, I go for both. If I don't like the feel and the sound I won't buy it.

Woah! I love the fact that a bunch of you guys feel the same! Its awesome!

But yeah, I'm just happy to know that I'm not the only one who feels that way about instruments. A few years back, I wouldn't have compared a high end instrument to a low end based on feel, but just on word of mouth. Just glad to be thinking differently now, even after my experience with a high end instrument.

Well I'm the opposite on that. I go for sound then deal with the feel later. By "feel" I think most people are referring to-- first- the way the neck feels in their hand. Is it too fat? Too skinny? Sticky because it's glossy? Neck dive? Too long or too short? Next is the weight of the body and how it effects the "feel". Then there is the comfort of the body against their body. Right? Actual physical "feel" of the bass is what I'm thinking is the "feel". How much of the "feel" is really bad or good? How much of the feel is real or perceived as being something wrong or right that makes one not like the bass or love it?? Then now am I over thinking? I want to be comfortable playing a bass too.,,, and for me the biggest things are ( outside of sound): Is the bass too heavy? Does the bass have "neck dive". Other than that I don't give much thought about it. Is "feel" the same as "playability"?

I agree with this definition of "feel". And how an instrument feels does matter to me. If it is too heavy or too awkward or the neck is sticky or whatever it is that makes it uncomfortable for me to play, I'm not interested. Sound/tone also matters, but I think that's something that you can do something about (change strings, pups, amps, effects, etc.). If the bass is uncomfortable for you to play, or it just doesn't "feel right" to you, then when you're playing, some part of your brain will be distracted by that or have to compensate -- the instrument will not be an extension of you.

Yes feel matters! If you don't like the way a bass feels in your hands you will not play it.
If it doesn't feel good- Don't do it.

You can have a bass worked on to an extent, but the general feel is there from the start and if you don't bond with it from day one, you may never bond with it.

Okay- it's all about feel and not price. Right? That should get some more posts.

I spent about 300 on my Jazz build ( because I had a buncha' good parts ready to go) and it has "feel". It has "feel " as good as any new Real Jazz so that means price and feel are not to be compared.

I'm odd in that when I see a bass for sale for 100 bucks I usually won't touch it to see how it feels. If it feels good and doesn't sound good then forget it. That's why I say if it sounds like kill I'm not thinking about feel so much.

Also I've had big buck (for me) basses that feel really good but sound poopy.

When I first picked up my Precision, the weight, the way it felt and the tone was everything I wanted. Love at first sight. It's ash with a clear finish, which I'm really not crazy about. Yes i did change the pups, Same thing happened with my Jazz. of all the reasons for choosing looks is not really a consideration.

Price does matter. I can't bring mysrlf to pay full price. I'll wait for a sale or just bargain with the seller. Like uou said, Fletch. A big price (for you) is a huge factor for me. Something way out of my price limit is something I won't even touch.

Yeah I've spent the big bucks (for me) and have bought duds way too many times. I'm done. I have a good supply of guitars that kick. I haven't had the GAS because I've been disappointed so many times. It took years to get it together. It was the Great Disappointment Experiment. It lasted from 1999 up untill about a year ago or so.

Strokermania raises it's head again. i KNOW what you have and even your "dud" are way better than most of what is out there. Just for everybody's information Mr. Vance is actually a real musician that makes money! Yes he is, and he knows how to make his basse work.

Feel is very important to me...I'd own a Ric in addition to my 3 Fenders if they weren't so uncomfortable to play. A Jazz bass feels right at home for me, followed by a P.

As far as feel, my Squier VM Jazz is the most uncomfortable bass I own, it's awkward, unbalanced and is my favorite bass to hold. My jazz and Precision sound worlds better but the feel of it is the same as my old basses from my early days.

The bass I own that feels the most like basses from back inna day is My MIM Roadworn P. Sorry it just is that way. I have a 72 J and a 74 P. I've played Fender basses from the 60's and 50's too. I never thought I'd say a MIM P bass is the most like a 50's or 60's bass. I have played Custom Shop basses but they seemed too new!!! The two best basses I ever played were a 56 P and a 64 P. SWEEE--OTT !!!!!!

I have four basses, and I love the feel of them all: chunky necks, vintage frets (except for one fretless), and most of them sound great, as well. The one that doesn't (but it feels terrific) is a Godin A5 fretless. I'll hang onto it: I may find its sonic niche, yet.

I recently donated a P with the wrong "feel" to a fundraiser for a local musician with medical bills, a natural ash FSR that I had put a maple fingerboard neck on (the one in my avatar, in fact). It looked great, but it never felt right, so I ended up playing one of my others instead (for the record, a Classic '50s in fiesta red, an AV '57 in sunburst, and a Classic '51 in butterscotch).
