I want to start learning Bass.
My question is about Squire vs the MIM standard Precision Bass.
Is the quality of the Squire bad in comparison to the MIM Precision or is it close enough?
I owned a affinity Squire Start once and didn't like it because of the thin neck but it looks like the Squire Bass necks are the same as the MIM and American. Same scale, nut with, radius, frets etc.
How is the quality of the Squires compared to the MIM?

I own a MIM Jazz Bass and a Squier VM Modified Jazz Bass. The Squier is my back up, I prefer the feel and sound of the Jazz. If it's a question of money, don't be afraid to go with a Squier. The Classic Vibe Precisions have been getting great reviews.

Only other advice i'll give, play as many basses as you possibly can before you buy. You'll see a big difference in different ones that look identical.

Agree with Chefwong about a used MIM P-Bass from when they were still using alder bodies. They are going for just a little more than a new Squier Vintage Modified one. The hardware and electronics on the Squier are not as good as MIM. A Squier is a good first bass however, better than many other brands of Asian instruments. The RECENT Squiers are the best since when they were made in Japan back in the early to mid 80's.

Maybe you should ask that question in the Squier Bass section of the Fender Forum. My opinion is that the skill of the player makes more difference than the instrument. If a Squier Affinity is the best bass you can afford and if you really want to play well then that is a bass that can get you there. Just buy the best bass you can afford and play it. If the best you can afford is an Affinity, then get one.

As usual, brotherdave said it well. Great advice. I assumed you had a ballpark figure in mind for how much you wanted to spend. Remember, there are other costs too, case, strings, amp and a lot of other assorted neccessary things.

Once you own a bass, you'll find yourself needind ALL kinds of things. It just happens.

Well I A/B'd a Affenity Squier and a MIM Fender P Bass for about an hour and really couldn't notice much difference playing it in the music store. They both felt about the same and sounded great to my ears. Again I am a beginner bass player so that's probably why. Anyways I ended up getting the Squier because it's good enough for me to learn with playing in my basement. Also it was only $179 vs $579. If I get good enough I will upgrade latter.
I am very impressed with this Squier as there is no fret buzz, sharp frets, intonation was set good, and it seems to stay in tune very well.
Thanks for all your help.
