i purchased this fender bass from a friend locally. unfortunately i cannot find any kind of serial number, but i do believe that this is a legit american fender bass. from the pots i think its an 81 or 82, but i'll post pics for the forum to help me figure it out. thanks!

the guys over at talkbass believe that the PB-331 is indicative of an early japan squier model.

if anyone else has any input that would be still appreciated. thanks!

I am no expert, but the headstock decal looks like it was added after the headstock was finished. It also has an odd wear pattern where the rest of the headstock is in better condition with no gouges, scratches, dents, etc.

I would agree that it is a Japanese made Squier Precision with a 70's style Precision decal poorly added to the head stock.
The tuners on this bass are just like the ones on my mid- eighties Squire Jazz bass.

The pots and electronics are definitely Japanese and the fact that the routing is like an early US Precision bass with the slab fingerboard all points to a Japanese origin for this bass.
I'll bet that it is a very nice sounding and playing bass.

Have some fun with it!

This is, or was anyway, the second most desirable of all Squier P-Basses. The Japanese 1980 Squiers were amazing. It is a very nice bass! Great Squier find! Too bad about the decal. I'd play it!

I ended up returning this bass to my friend. It was a fantastic playing instrument but it just wasnt the right one to own given the lack of true serial number & headstock decal. In a few days I will have more questions about another bass I'm picking up!
