You can contact Fender support for the diagram using the information on the Contact Us link under support.

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation
Attn: Consumer Relations Dept.
17600 N. Perimeter Drive, Suite 100
Scottsdale, AZ 85255

Telephone: (480) 596-7195
Fax: (480) 367-5262
E-mail: consumerrelations@fender.com

If they have the diagram they will send it to you. I suggest email and phoning if possible. Even with the Fender diagram, you are not in the clear since the problem you are for sure going to run into is that the stock pre-amp is no longer available. You can find equivalent OEM parts for everything but the preamp. You could find one on another bass just like it. But the better solution would be to go to an aftermarket preamp, 9 volt since you have a 9 volt slot. Frankly the stock preamps were rudimentary at best and have a reputation of eating batteries compared to today's lower drain circuitry.

Whatever modern preamp you select will have a wiring diagram that might be different from the Fender one. You could also set it up passive.

Be sure to get some white pickup covers which would be the correct look on a 1980 P-Bass Special with matching headstock.

What color?

Hi all,

It took me some time, but I found some diagrams on the internet. I am not sure they are accurate.

See the webpage:

Yes that appears to be the correct diagram. I'd decide on what preamp to use, then see their suggested wiring schematic.

@brotherdave

Did the Special and Elite basses were the precursors to the modern active P and Js?

@chromeface:

According to this article of Fender they are:

http://www.fender.com/en-NL/news/index.php/?display_article=819

Back at Fender headquarters in the United States, the early ’80s was a busy time. The company introduced its first bass model with active electronics, the Precision Bass Special, in 1980, and Fender very soon abandoned the three-bolt neck-mounting system adopted in the early 1970s; returning to the classic four-bolt method for all of its bass guitars.

Yes. The 1980 P-Bass Special would be the granddaddy yes. First active Fender bass. Very nice instrument at the time and still capable. The preamp's battery life was much shorter than more modern preamps that are far more efficient.

I have a couple extra of the 2-band pre-amps for a P-Bass Special, if you are interested. I got them with mine.

The Rocco Prestia signature Precision looked similar except the jack is side-mounted, the active/passive switch is absent and the split humbucker is reversed.

Hi Gougedeye,

Do you still have a 1980 Precision Special pre-amp available?

I have a problem with mine and I am looking for a replacement.

Thanks!
