I own a P bass I purchased used back in 1984-85. Now I decided to sell it and there are always q's about it all being original. I've never done any modifications to it but not sure if the previous owner did.

What should I look for?
Any Idea of it's fair value?

I looked at a fender site and checked the serial # on plate 703390 and says it is 1976.

If someone can tell me how to post some pics here I will. Been trying but have not been able.

Thank you!

If you want people here to have a look at things that can tell if it is original or not will need to know and see these things.

1. There is a neck code stamped at the base of the neck, remove neck to see it and photograph it and tell us what it says in case we can't see well enough in photos.

2. Remove pickguard and note the POT CODES stamped into the potentiometer casings. Photo the pots and the solder joints in closeup. Tell us all the numbers you see on the pots.

3. Remove the pickup screws from the body and photo the backs of the pickups. Note any writing or number codes. Photo the pickup cavity and note any markings or stickers there. Photo the back of the pickguard making note of any numbers on stickers or freehand writing. Do all this carefully WITHOUT breaking any solder connections.

Then reassemble. Photo every square inch from every angle possible except the fretboard above the body or below the nut.

Need closeups of serial plate and all other hardware plus closeup of front and back of headstock and front of pickups which may require removal of the chrome pickup cover. Remove bridge cover if in place so bridge is visible and get a closeup of the bridge.

Photo the case also and closeup the case badge if present.

Here's my old 76 you can kind of compare it to.

The bass has a Dimarzio Model P from the 70's. Other than that it's what a 76 looks like with a faded/ yellowed/ worn Creme finish.

Thanks for the pics Vance

If I was to compare I'd say the body on mine is in very simitar condition than yours, actually maybe mine has a bit less dings, on yours all screws look new.............mine are more rusted. Did you replace the screws on yours? The color in mine is more yellow but there is a bit less paint wear out on the top edge, maybe because I have not been using it.
The neck on mine looks a lot better, there is no wear on the back neck. Original finish still intact with very minor blemishes. Been busy @ the office but will try to post some pics asap.
Thanks again

- get on fender and start up a post----go to file - open new tab-- then go to favorites and click on photobucket. Huver over pic - box around pic comes on go to bottom slot of box and click on it- it says copied-- go to Fender post and push Ctrl V and the http or whatever it is comes up on the posting space- go back to photobucket up in it's rab again and repeat for as many pics as you want in the post.

If you look at the pickguard screws- they are pretty old and beat up. That bass is as beat up as I am !

That's a cool looking precision bass that you have there.

I think that the neck and body are beautiful. I don't think that the knobs or pickguard are original although the pickguard may be a Fender pickguard. Fender, usually put black
pickguards on their basses in 1976, not the red tortoise. The plastic used in the tortoise shell pickguard in the 60's and 70s was identified as emitting toxic fumes if it burned, so it was banned under OSHA laws until they could reformulate the plastic.

Your serial number is pretty high for a 1976 bass that does not have a decal serial number.
Your was probably made right before Fender changed over to the new serial number scheme of putting the number on the decal just like the other bass pictured.

When Fender changed over to neck serial numbers, they also went from Kluson made Tuners to Schaller tuning machines.

Good luck selling it.

You're welcome sir.

Your bass looks like it may have been a Creme finish like mine. Mine was a little darker when I bought it. I brought it home and cleaned it. I remember that I had removed a thin layer of the finish (or gunked up clearcoat) making the color brighter. I thought maybe it had been in a fire or had water damage. Yours looks darker than mine did. Maybe it saw allot of smokey bars. Anyway it must sound pretty good by the looks of it.
