i have a MIM p-bass with duncan quarter pounders. i picked it up the other day and was getting no sound, so i gave it to a friend who checked it out and found out the pickups are dead. i liked the tone/power i got from the basslines, but i'm thinking of trying something new. i play in an alt/rock/punk band, so i want something with a nice growl to it. recommendations would be welcome.

That's weird. I'd get a second opinion and have a real tech check it.

The SD SPB-3 (called a "Quarter-Pounder" in the USA, but called a "Royale With Cheese" in France because of the metric system) is a very reliable pickup and your friend might be mistaken. Sure it could be dead, but I'd double check before running out and buying a new one. They also are pretty unique sounding.

If you like the pup and it is for sure dead then you could have it rewound for a bit less than a new one at somewhere like http://brandonwoundpickups.com/?page=services or a similar service, perhaps one in or near your town. That will be cheaper than a new one.

The high end custom pickup shops like Lindy Fralin, Curtis Novak, Jason Lollar, Rio Grande and others charge about as much for a rewind as they charge for a new pickup because they had rather sell a new pickup than rewind a used one. But rewinding usually is not nearly as expensive as a new pickup, it should not cost more than half what a new pickup costs.

The Fender Original P-Bass pickup for about the same price as a new SD SPB-3 is also a good pickup, but sounds slightly different. You won't know if you like it till you try it. I like them both. I also like the Wilde By Bill Lawrence P-46. All of the ones I'm suggesting are in the same general price range as a SD SPB-3.

hmmmmm.... plays in an alternative/ punk type thing....... is it possible that maybe we just got a little carried away and thrashed it one to many thrashes???? Hmmm? Now it's all dead and no sound???...... You'll have that.

I'd mash a Dimarzio model P into it and RAWK ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But Bro Dave is right once again about the reliability of that pickup. Maybe a ground came unsoldered or something.

I have 2 MIM basses one has the Duncan Basslines in it. The other has the '62 rissue Fender pickups. I prefer the '62 reissues.

This is another "hit and go" from an OP.
