The black paint is over top all the (factory?) markings in the neck pocket as well as the neck butt over Mr. Torres' name. Would that indicate it was a refin in black (or burst) at some time? Then it could have been natural from the factory.

Could Fender tell you what it was originally if you called them with the SN?

This is turning into a real "whoshotit" thread. Real mystery! Fun!

I would be very surprised if there was any way Fender could tell you about bass color from a serial number from the 70's.

I could be wrong but I would bet that a good luthier could tell you what the original color of the bass was from looking at the whole instrument, including control cavities.

I think that the bass was originally black and some black over-spray was applied when the owner stripped off too much back in certain areas.
You can tell from the back wear on the bass in the black section and the smooth compounded areas around the lower bout.
The over spray black was applied around and in the neck cavity and it is obviously poorly done, but it is not a complete refinish.
The challenge would be to preserve the black and refinish just the areas that were stripped.

That may be too much to ask and very expensive to do. It may be better just to refinish the bass in whatever color you want.

The bass is looking great Megamanx!

The reason that newer pickguard doesn't have the pickup cover holes is that they stopped putting the covers on the basses in the mid- 90s or so.

If you get a vintage Precision pickguard, it will be pre-drilled with the cover holes.

You could get the measurements of the hole locations from a vintage bass if you want to go to that much trouble to get the hole locations right.

Have fun playing that 76!

I have the original pickguard, I guess I can place it on top of this one and drill away. The only thing I don't have a drill.

Nice Job.
That bass would look great with a tortoise shell pickguard IMO.
It sure looks very nice the way that it is.
