Thanks for the info Brotherdave. Very interesting. I'm sure it will be a big help to plastic cloud.

I would have never thought the color on the face of my headstock was from aging. Especially when looking at the edges and back.

Thanks again. I appreciate all you do.

The varnish is thicker on the facing of the headstock often, but on model you have I think the facing was also sprayed with some tinted varnish. This wasn't done in 73/74. Sunlight will cause it to darken even more.

That would make sense. It's been quite a few years and I've slept a time or two since I bought the bass, but I always remembered the face being darker the the edges and back.

And once again, thanks.

That bass is an incredible find. I also have a little trouble with the fact that it has a black PG because it should be tortoise shell for that year (1972).

I was wondering if it could be a warranty repaired bass, where something broke on the original body or pickguard that required a replacement?

The head stock face on all 70's Fender basses were done in nitro lacquer to melt in that big Precision bass Logo. If the basses are kept in the case, they will stay white. Its sunlight or smoke or both that turns the head stock yellow. The rest of the neck with tend to stay light but enough sun will turn them darker.

That body finish looks like a '74 but that black pickguard makes it look like a '76, but the tug bar is on the wrong side of the strings to be a '76!
Its a mystery bass! Cool!
Have fun playing it!

It doesn't really matter to me if my head stock is tinted laquer or not. It is what it is. I have mentioned that it's been kept in the case, but it was my main bass for about 12 years.
I was giging pretty much every weekend back then. Sometimes 3 or 4 times week, so it's had plenty of exposure in the smoke filled clubs & dance halls I played. A few outdoor gigs in the sun as well.
I didn't take as good of care of it back then as I do now.
I was young and dumb........
.......now I'm old and dumb!

In hind sight, I wish I had bought all the guitars at that auction. Thank you for taking the time to look into this Precision, I really appreciate your input. I will try to find someone to do a hands on appraisal but want to make sure I find someone who's really knowledgable, like you!! I'll also look into the insurance. I have a '64 Precision and a '71 Gibson EB2, both all original except the '64 was sanded down to a natural finish - dam. If you think of anything else I should know, I'd be greatful for your comments. Thanks again. Brian
If you Google "The Plastic Cloud" - that was me on bass back in 1968. Unfortunately, I gave it up in '69 and sold all my gear to buy a house. Gettin back at it after over 40 years is great fun. Cheers

Good luck on getting an appraisal. Hopefully you'll find someone qualified to do so and you can post back and let us know what you found out. That bass is in remarkable condition. I hope it checks out okay.
