Based on the serial yours is a 1980 model which was the first year these were available. These don't show up often in all-original collector condition with the original case They were only made for a few years. They differ from today's P-Bass Special in that what made them "Special" was the active electronics and deluxe solid brass hardware made by Schaller for Fender including Fender's first high mass brass bridge. They were one of the first active basses on the market. I've seen these in Candy Apple Red and Lake Placid Blue that seems to often have faded to the green side. They had a matching headstock painted to match, which is rare on a P-Bass. These came with white pickup covers, white/black/white pickguard and had a passive/active switch. I think they were replaced by the Elite series about 1984. Really nice P-basses. I saw a used one in fair to poor shape (non-collectible) actually sell for $1050 recently. It was really beat up. As condition and originality improve the value would rise in proportion to condition. I would not expect more than about $1700 in excellent condition and probably more like $1400 in a private sale for an all original one that has never been modified with only normal play wear. A dealer might offer $700 or $800 then sell it twice that. Of course those figures are for one around here in NC/SC USA. Depending on where you live it could bring a little more or a bit less. It would almost certainly appraise much higher, but instruments rarely, if ever, sell for appraisal value. Fender ads for the model claimed Donald Duck Dunn was using one of these during the Blues Brothers heyday period, but on screen he usually sported his '58 passives and a newer Olympic White one...however he has a tendency to play C.A. Red P-Basses and might have toured with one. Another player of this model at the time was said to be Craig MacGregor of Foghat.

Based on what I've owned, sold and recently seen, I would say somewhere in the $1,200 to $1,500 range.

I'd like to see pics so I can see if it's the one I'm thinking of. I may have seen one here at Music-go- round. I think basses go for a little more over in the Carolinas. Prob because you're next to the Ocean and that's a good thing. Everyone wants a nice bass over there..... I would..
