No it definitely was not James Jamerson. He never worked Memphis. This was recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis in 1968 while Bobby Womack was under contract to MINIT records and produced by Chip Moman. When finally released in 1969 the LP title was "MY PRESCRIPTION." Shortly after the LP release Minut Records parent corporation, Liberty Records, took over the Minit label. This was the last song released as a single from the LP and it didn't come out until 1970 as a Liberty single, Liberty 56186. Tommy Cogbill was a frequent bassist in "The Memphis Boys" which was the house band at American Sound Studios during this time, however this project does not appear on his discography. So next I went looking at Mike Leech, but it isn't listed on Mike Leech's personal discography either, which i now believe could be an oversight. Mr. Leech did get bassist credit on the previous Womack project at American Sound which was the LP titled "FLY ME TO THE MOON" recorded the previous year that contained a great song Womack wrote and gave to Wilson Picket titled "I'm a Midnight Mover." HOWEVER Mike Leech is definitely credited with doing at least some of the arranging on the "My Prescription" LP, so he must have been there during the project and that makes it more than likely that it WAS also Mike Leech playing bass on the "My Prescription" sessions. Like Motown recordings, sometimes it is difficult to know exactly who was playing on what sessions at American Sound but on bass it was usually Cogbill or Leech. In this case I think based on the arranging credit that it was Mike Leech on bass. Part of the problem with the discographies from American Sound projects is that most of the house band has passed. They were all seasoned musicians. Mike Leech’s recording bass credits range from Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis to Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Reba McIntyre and Johnny Cash, and also includes Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” so it is understandable that this one project he played bass on would get overlooked.

Just went back and listened to lots of Mike Leech's original tracks including the "Suspicious Minds" studio track for Elvis. (This line is sometimes erroneously attributed to Bill Black, but it was definitely Mike Leech and again was produced by Chip Moman.) Very good work and one of my favorite Elvis lines. I next remembered that Jerry Scheff (who was Elvis's touring bassist from about '69 on) took that original studio line and totally blew the roof off the sucker when playing that song live when I saw Elvis in Atlanta twice in 1973. I went looking and found a link to Scheff's blazing version also. I suggest listening to both to see the difference between a great recording bassline (Leech's) and how a totally awesome live player (Scheff) can embellish that original trail live. I don't see how Sheff kept up with HIMSELF after about 3 minutes in, he is really and truly a gifted bassist.
