Fender basses used to come with nickle strings stock. Actually I'm so old that I can remember a time that all electric bass strings were nickle plated. Besides mellowing the sound while adding playing comfort, nickle plated strings are also a bit gentler to frets which is important especially with rounds. I use two nickle plated sets. Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats flatwound and Thomastik-Infeld EB344 Power Bass roundwound. Of the two I prefer the Power Bass. I think the Power Bass set is the best bass string in the world and probably the most versatile working in more different styles. I've used the Power Bass rounds for over 6 years with no discernible fret wear on my number 1. The Jazz Flats are less versatile basically because of their ultra low tension but do record exceptionally well so long as you restrict yourself to not overplaying them. The Jazz Flats simply are not as much FUN to play. I only use one other set outside of the two T.I. nickle sets, that is the GHS 3050 Regular (not Medium) Precision Stainless Flats.
