As far as I know the standard pickup for a MIA P bass is just that. A regular USA P bass pickup. I hadn't thought about it much. I could be wrong knowing Fender and their encyclopedia of changes. It's like the yearly tax code the IRS puts out. 10,000 new pages a year. Of course I'm exagerateing. Not much though.

as far I as I know I think the modern standard MIA p basses do have the 62 pickup. I'm just not sure about my 1998 one!

Either way I find the one in my bass a bit muddy and too much in the bottom, so to speak.

I have run across the muddy pickup thing but it may be a combo of the wood/pickups/nut/set up etc.. I've changed out P bass USA pickups several or more times.

The Fender Original Precision Bass pickup set is not muddy at all. That is the set that comes in the Fender '62 RI P-Bass. Just loaded a set a couple of weeks ago in an 04 MIM Standard sunburst along with other electronic and cosmetic upgrades. The set comes with the baseplate shield wired in and the foam already mounted. The poles protrude through the holes on the pickup covers a bit so they are higher than the cover a few mm's. They are not only brighter but also hotter than the stock MIM pups which had a cool honk to them but not much in upper mid land. Shop around and you can find them for $65 or even less. I also suggest changing the tone cap with the FOPB set unless you like an edge in the upper mid tones. I used a vintage 60's Sprague Vitamin-Q PIO 200v 0.047 cap and fully shielded the thing.

What's the difference between the '57 and the '62 P-Bass pickups?

Only the '62 is labeled as the "original" P-Bass pickup!

Is there any way of telling which pickup is in the bass by opening it up and looking at it ?

I'm pretty sure the actual 57 pickup set had a raised "A" string pole piece. On the '62 they all are even and rise just above the surface of pickup cover. Most modern P-pups have the pole pieces lower than the cover. Longer pole pieces might be partly why the FOPB pickup is so hot without being severely overwound. The reading on a FOPB pup is specified at 10.5K (mine read 10.54) while the actual 57 pickups (in a real 57) almost always read just over 11.5K ohms. I'm guessing that 11.5K was the specified wind on the 57's. Therefore the 57 will inherently have less transparent upper mids but is not so severely overwound that it sounds one-dimensional. I wouldn't go much over 11.5K on a P-Bass though if you want the tone control to actually do anything at all.
