I came across a BLACK Duff McKagan P Bass body on ebay. I know you can only buy this in white now, but was told that at one point it came in black. I like the black better. Two questions:

1) Can someone give me some background on how unique the duff in black is? How long where they made? years made?

2) Will a standard P bass pickguard fit the Duff bass (or is the toggle in the way)?

Thanks

Bo

Hi,

I never saw a Duff McKagan P-Bass in black but Duff was seen playing an Aerodyne Jazz Bass a couple of years ago.

Not sure if a P-Bass guard would fit unless you perform some modifications.

It's definitely the Duff model, not Aerodyne.

It's a body from a black MIJ J-Bass Special for which the Duff P-Bass is based on.

The Duff P is available only in white.

Thanks chromeface.

I'm happy I found the configuration and look that I wanted. That's all that's important.

One last question. I have the serial, JV98435.

Is there any way to confirm what type of wood it is? I'm hoping it's Alder.

Thanks

The MIJ J-Bass Special uses a basswood body, however there are few examples which featured alder bodies.

Thanks for your help guys. I really want Alder, so I opted out of that purchase and found a new Duff body. Just gonna paint it black :D.

Thanks again.

The Power Jazz Bass Special features active electronics, a reversed split neck pickup and a 22-fret neck.

I think this model would be a Duff P-Bass with active circuitry, reverse split pickup and 22 frets. Not sure if Duff ever used a Power Jazz Bass Special.

The MIJ Jazz Special (1986 -91) had a P bass Basswood Body , maple Jazz neck with rosewood fret board & control knonbs with that were black plastic with a gold Fender "F" featured at the center of the knob, it also had a black neck plate, & a Jazz/ precision pick up configuration.
The MIM Duff McKagan Signature P bass has an Alder body (cut at the Fender Factory in Corona Calif. & shipped to Mexico for paint & assembly) a Jazz bass neck, Thick Black Knurled control knobs, a Black neck plate with skull & bones emblazened on it, Semour Duncan STK J2B Jazz pick up & a standard P bass pick up. ( Duff says they're apperantly better than his original bass...hmmm maybe but what else do you expect him to say)

I've heard good things about theb Duff bass & they're supposed to be one of the better basses coming out of Mexico, ...also with regard to duff playing a black Jazz special....he dose have one (& I'm not reffering to the Aerodyne) I believe his Black Jazz bass special is from the Fender Custom Shop (they made a few Basses for him.) :)

Did Fender release the active version of the Duff P with the reverse split pickup and 22 frets? Duff's P-Bass is based on the MIJ Jazz, though I suppose his black CS basses are 22-fretters with reverse split pickup and active 2-band EQ!

I'm pretty sure it's a passive bass, I've been reading up on this bass (thinking about adding one to my arsenal... a bass with a P/J set up) ....I checked out some user reviews on the Talk Bass Blog....all users liked this bass & gave it a thumbs up.

Duff uses Aerodynes as well.

Not sure if these basses are made at the CS, as the Aerodyne is resolutely Japanese-made.

Yes Duff has a few Black Japanese Aerodyne basses,...he also has a couple of his white signature basses & a few customshop Jazz special basses ( I think one of them is black as I saw a recent photo of him using a black Jazz special) :)

Did some of his Custom Shop Special J's had the reverse P neck pickup, 22 frets and active EQ?
