If MusicMan/EB can offer the Slo model Stingrays with a Sterling neck, I don't see why Fender doesn't offer a Jazz bass neck on a P bass. Price it between the American Std P and Jazz prices....so around $1225 street price. I'm game!

I have a '74 P Bass with a '68 Jazz "A" neck on it. Bound rosewood finger board, dot markers, nice and thin. I've had it for 33 years and have never found another neck as great to play.
I also have a '72 Jazz Bass; bound rosewood neck with pearl block markers. It too is a great neck but not as nice as my '68.
I recall one of Duck Dunn's favorite basses was a P Bass with a Jazz neck. He said "it let him play
a little faster".

If you must have one, try the Custom Shop.

What appears simple to the consumer, is an added nightmare of parts, logistics, suppliers, inventory production numbers, distribution, ordering by retailers, wall space for retailers, etc.

It has implications far beyond simply adding a J neck to a P body.

As The Jazz neck on a P body is one of the oldest conversions going, and I take onboard that maybe it is not as simple as just putting another decal on the headstock etc, for those of us that don't have custom shop money would a FSR be a better option? Would that be a less logistical nightmare?

You know. This has got me thinking. If I was a large instrument retailer you know what I'd do? Ever year I'd order two FSRs from Fender. The first an order of 150 J basses with a P neck. The second 250 P basses with J necks. I bet they'd sell out every year.

Oh, as to who is with the OP? I won't buy an American made Fender until they put one out with specs I like that is worth the ridiculous amount of money they charge. There is nothing in the American series basses that interests me outside of the Vintage series. The fact that they charge what they do for them ensures that I can afford to own two quality Mexican made Precisions for the same price. P basses aren't rocket science. The basic design is over 50 years old. The Classic and Roadworn series basses are a much better buy. Even more ridiculous is to take my money to an overpriced "competitor" that simply churns out P bass knock offs, but claims some ridiculous "boutique" status because they overprice their product and don't sell all that many. No thanks.

I've always been puzzled by the idea of a J neck on a P bass. I mean, what's so special about the P body? Why not just buy a J bass and be done with it? If it's good enough for Jaco and Geddy, it's good enough for me.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Wow, leave Fender?

I think I will just happily switch between one model and another till I pass away. I love them all.

It does seem that there are a large chunk of players who like the P sound, but prefer the J neck. There are also some that like the opposite.

I guess I just don't get the OP's issue with slapping together a parts bass. To me, the ability for the player to customize a Fender is one of the great benefits of Leo's idea to make the design so easily repairable.

I played a P bass that I built completely out of parts I won of ebay for years. It was a great bass. The guy I sold it to gigs it regularly just like I did. I got a steal on it, so I passed the savings on to the next guy when I wanted a different bass. Only seems fair.

I'm still puzzled why Fender, or a retailer like Musicians Friend does special run some of these combos every year or two. I've seen people on here clamoring for both. They were doing it before I went on my 5 year hiatus. People are still clamoring for it. Seems like an easy money maker to me for both Fender and the retailer who jumps on it. They already do the decal swap with the Hoppus J bass anyhow.

To me the ideal bass for the guys who like the J body, but the P neck would have been the Frank Bello Bass from a few years ago. Slab J body, P neck, P/J pups. I almost got one just because I thought it was a real cool combo of features.

I have a Jazz bass, a Franken P bass and a Franken P/J bass, all with Jazz necks. It's the neck I prefer these days, so yes I would buy one like that if they made one. Preferably one made in America.

I also want to buy an American made Precision with a A-neck. I have for several years.

We should not have to buy a $3500+ Custom Shop bass to get this feature.

I tried to custom-build this bass last summer in the Wood Vault at the Fender Visitor Center after the tour. I was told, "I will not make a Jazz neck and put Precision decal on it." This was from the guy who ran the tour.

In the Wood Vault, I found American Special, American Standard and MIM bodies & necks. They were all standard issue; in other words, exactly what you can purchase from a 'Reliable Fender' or 'The Stratosphere' on-line part-out sellers. At that time and probably today, you cannot order anthing--if you see the neck and body you want, you put it together and thats that. If you want an American made, 1.5 width Precision neck, then you're out-of-luck.

The dealer would not have to be bypassed in this ordering process. Customer walks into an authorized Fender dealer and places an order for an American Standard, 'A'- Neck Precision bass. The order gets worked through production and shipped to the dealer or pick-up. Fender is starting to do things differently, such as the new American Vintage Series based on modeling actual samples of several period instruments. Maybe they'll eventually get around to doing a '73 'A' Neck Precision.

We can voice our opinion and hopefully they will listen.

Isn't that what the Nate Mendel is? An early 70's A-width P? Or at least as close as you'll get. It's likely MIJ or MIM, but honestly the American made basses aren't really THAT nice anymore. At least in comparison. Hell, outside of the Vintage Series FMIC USA doesn't even make a P bass I'd play. The MIM Classic, Artist, and Roadworn series basses I've played have all played and sounded better than the American Series and Specials I've played. The American Specials look nice, but I found them extremely unimpressive in terms of tone. Unless you are bound and determined to buy an American made P bass just to buy an American made P bass and keep your money here. Then I don't see why the Mendel wouldn't be suitable. Especially if it isn't going to be your only bass.
