Looking at Fender's website there are 14 different P Bass models. Fender continues to release new instruments and amps such as Pawn Shop, Modern Player, Blacktop, American Special etc which are great tweeks of the Fenders I love but they have yet to give me what I want and I'm sure atleast one other person in this world wants.

Therefore, I won't buy another Fender until Fender puts out an American Made P Bass with a Jazz Bass Neck.

I'm tired of buying a Jazz neck off of ebay or buying a "licensed by Fender" neck from Warmoth and swapping them out.

Can't justify the cost on having one made in Fender's Custom Shop for my skill level.

And, no I don't want a Deluxe P Bass Special that has the 1.5" nut either because I don't want the active EQ or the Jazz bridge pickup.

I just want a standard American made P Bass with one pickup, volume/tone and 1.5" at the nut...is that asking too much.

Musicman offers their SLO which is the Stingray with a Sterling neck.

Heck, Mark Hoppus gets a Jazz bass with a Jazz bass body, P Bass pickup and P Bass neck.

So, what do you say? Who's with me?

Fender, can you please make an American P Bass with a Jazz Bass Neck and while you're at it make an American Jazz Bass with a P Bass neck for those who like the Jazz bass but want a thicker width at the nut.

I have a 74 P bass with the Jazz width nut/ neck. I love it. I think many bass players would enjoy the setup of a Jazz width on a P bass body. As far as I can ever tell in the 30 some years I've had mine-- it sounds really good and I believe the jazz width neck does not change the sound of a p bass. The J width neck only makes the P a little more comfortable to play-- which is not a bad thing.

The Jazz bass maple neck on a P bass is what I have. It's very simple to do this type of thing at the factory. How could it not be? Just put the P bass decal on a Jazz/ "A" width neck and slap it on a Precision body. No marketing needed-- no big time artist needs to endorse it, just say "Oh by the way we are now putting out a line of p basses with "A" necks." People would buy them. But what do I know?

I just built a Jazz from parts and used a Fender P bass neck on it from an 03 P bass. Not only does the guitar sound good it plays very easy and is really not an issue at all. It's a better bass IMO than a Hoppus because it's just a straight up Jazz with a P bass neck. No big deal.

I pretty much agree with what Stroker Vance says... as both P & J basses are in production, there is no need for expensive re-tooling on Fender's part; simply put a Precision decal on a Jazz neck, mate it to a P bass body and they will sell like hot cakes - just like they did when a narrow neck width used to be an option on the P bass.

Come on Fender; how about it? :)

i absolutely would buy a PASSIVE, P bass with a jazz neck made in the USA. Check the poll mod's i think your going to see a market. I had the blacktop jazz, liked it just fine, roll off the bridge pup's and you've got it. The only reason i traded it for for a Highway one jazz was when i decided i wanted a US model. Now i have 2 :D

Exactly what I was thinking. Both necks are standard production so it's really just a matter of swapping out decals.

I have an American Special P Bass that I put a "license by Fender" Jazz neck from Warmoth on it.

It plays great and didn't change the original tone but it doesn't say "Fender Precision Bass" on the headstock.

I know that sounds pretty lame because a decal on the headstock doesn't affect the tone or playability but I just want the whole Fender experience...Name recognition, tone, quality etc straight from Fender.

I do think Fender should offer both variables, J-P, and P-J basses.

"Now" being the key word. Next week, you'll have an entirely different bass than this week.

I am baffled that Fender has not done for mass-produced guitars what Dell did for mass-produced PCs. Allow you to choose from limited options and create your "customized" guitar/bass. As long as the options are limited, they can still be massed produced. Even it they added a small fee for the "semi-custom" it would be worth it.

Like you, I can not find the exact configuration, look and options in one model. As a result, I"m going to buy a body and neck separate and put it together.

I understand your point.

If you live near or will be in Southern California, hear is an alternative to a Fender Custom Shop P-bass (around 7:40 talks about The Fender American Design Experience):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6mklu00icI

It is from the Fender Visitor Center.

I have looked around for prices, but to no avail. I must assume they would be between a Custom Shop Instrument and a MIA Deluxe, depending upon the build-up.

One thing is for certain, it looks like a nice interactive museum.

You have overlooked one thing as to why Fender will not do this.

In order to do this, Fender would have to implement factory to customer sales and effectively eliminate the dealer from the retailing equation.

While the customer would somewhat benefit, the dealer would be financially devastated by such as decision and would have little incentive to carry Fender products in a brick and mortar store. Many Bassists and guitarists will not buy an instrument without playing a number of them first and this would eliminate that portion of customer satisfaction for them.

While Fender could offer a limited menu driven Bass/guitar builder through the dealer, would it be financially profitable enough for dealers and Fender to benefit from it? I doubt it. Fender is in the business to maximize profit as much as possible for themselves and their dealers, while still being competitive with other brands. Stocking [I doubt anyone does this past a certain level any more] various tuners, bridges, pick-ups, necks, etc. costs them money in storage space and inventory control. Most companies only keep enough parts on hand for a current production run of whatever production run they are making at that time.

Does Fender build all their parts in-house? Not likely - they probably contract out things like bridges, tuners, etc. Any disruption in the logistics train and production is a mess for weeks.

In short, some would like it and some would hate it.

Fender guitars and basses are still some of the most played instruments in the world. I'll admit I'm a Fender snob, always have been, I've owned other brands but have never been satisfied unless it was a Fender. This is my personal opinion so don't fire back.

Fender is a corporation that is in business to make money. That's what corporations do. Have they made some bonehead mistakes? Sure. Have they done some great things? Yes. Will they grow in the future, let's hope so, if just for sentimental reasons.

In today's business think, profit above everything else, including quality. Unless you're willing to shell out the bucks for exactly what you want, you're going to get less. Open your eyes to reality.

If you want the biggest bang for your buck, go with an American Standard, unless you can go Custom Shop.

I think an interesting poll would be, "What modifications have you made to your Fender guitar or bass." Seems that a huge number of people here have modified their Fender instruments or are planning to mod.

What other brand can say that they are that great a platform for creating what you want?

Back to the original post, I think it's known to be pretty common for players to place a jazz neck on a P Bass body. And people have been doing this for a very long time. So why not offer a passive p with this option. I'd buy it:)

Thanks for the link. That's exactly what I would love to do, not custom, just pick from what they already have. Need to find out more about this. Unfortunately, I live in NC so I can stop by easily:(
