If you're referring to the new Classic Series 70's P-Bass with the maple neck with black inlays, then yes, its made in Japan. Played one this weekend at a local shop.

You know that and I know that, but he wants to hear it from someone that actually gets a paycheck from FMIC.

LOL! I believe you guys. :D That is indeed the bass I'm referring to. Of course it would be nice to hear from someone from FMIC, apparently they are scarce around here...which I don't really get, but that's neither here nor there.

Thanks very much for your input.

The original Japanese Classic '70s P-Bass came with the choice of alder (PB70) or ash (PB70US/ASH) body and a maple neck with rosewood or maple fingerboard with white or black pearloid dots. Available in natural, 3-colour sunburst and olympic white.

There's also a fretless version (PB70-84US-FL) featuring an unlined fretless maple fretboard, unfortunately it's available only for the Japanese domestic market.

Normally Fender should offer the 70s Precision in Natural Ash along with the already existing 3-Colour Sunburst and Olympic White finishes.

Although originally listed as a finish option when the 70s P-Bass came into the scene as a Pawnshop model before joining the Classic series in 2011, Natural is actually available for the Japanese domestic market. It's possible that Fender will finally offer the finish worldwide.

I bet an American Vintage 70s P-Bass and a fretless version with an unlined maple fingerboard are also in the works.

Unlike the MIJ version the MIA will feature an unbound neck with dots and the choice or rosewood or maple fretboard. Not sure about the exact release date of these reissues.

...finally....if they do it. I for one would put down the cash.

I hit upon that combination of neck and body about 30 years ago when I put the neck of my '71 Jazz Bass on a natural ash Precision body.
It is a black- block maple neck and it was a great combination.
It looked and sounded great.

I have long since returned the jazz neck to its original body.

Does anyone know if the maple neck version of this new 70's Precision has a one piece neck? (no separately glued on Fretboard)?

I saw a youtube video from Bass Emporium where he says it's a one piece.

This new blocked maple board looks nice!

Thanks,
Chinjazz

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to thank the OP mikeddd for posting the specs for the MIJ version of this bass. AFAIK, they have switched over completely to MIM.

One thing I have heard is that on the MIM the frets stick out through the binding - pictures on Sweetwater's site would seem to confirm that. On my MIJ it looks more like standard binding:

Image

Can anyone confirm this on the MIM?

In the meantime and for the record, here's a shot of my MIJ, which I had modded with Alembic Activators:

Image

Haven't had a chance to record with it yet but I love the way it plays! Part of me wishes I had a Bada** II that I have laying around put on to complete the '70s look, but I prefer the stock bridge.

Which type of wiring you used on that P-Bass? Two volumes and a master tone or master volume, pickup pan and tone?

This one is set-up with vol/vol/filter. The more recent ones are vol/pan/filter. The low-pass filter is a bit different than an normal tone control - this is part of the magic of Alembic electronics. The filter control adjusts the frequency cutoff of the low pass filter. Other Alembic setups on Alembic basses (as opposed to the Activator replacement sets for non-Alembic instruments) may have more controls, like Q-switches that determine the amount of boost at the cutoff point, or sometimes even variable-Q pots.

It's actually an entire pickup/active preamp/wiring set, so I couldn't tell you, but here is a description of the Activator system: http://www.alembic.com/prod/pickups.html

I haven't really recorded with it yet, but I do have a couple of recordings of my Telecaster Bass which also has a split-P Activator setup. You can hear me change the filter frequency throughout this piece (strung with Chromes, played with pick): http://soundcloud.com/hieronymous-seven/ostronato

What is the reason for this preference of a Japanese Fender over a Mexican or a US made Bass ??
is it a colour choice or quality issues you may have been informed about with a Mex ? Brother Dave is spot on about the Ensenada made Basses being very very good indeed and my Mex P Bass came with CTS pots etc as standard and the only "upgrade" i did was with new Fender 60s type Alnico Pups and i only did that out of curiosity rather than being unhappy with the ceramics that were stock, Or pay the extra money for a US made Bass that has that "Made in the USA" vibe about it....I thought at one time Japanese fenders were made for the Asian market and could only be imported on a personal basis,. Spose that´s all changed now then  :?:
