Hello all,

I'm looking to purchase a '70s Precision Electric Bass but want to ensure it's MIJ and not MIM. I believe they are MIJ but want to be sure. Thank you.

Serial would probably tell the tale.

Thank you, brotherdave. Hopefully a Fender rip will chime in? I want to be sure that if I buy a new '70s P that it will be MIJ, not MIM.

Sorry, thought you were inquiring about a previous product...from the 70's. In somewhat of a paradox the recent production Classic Series 70's P-Basses I've seen were Japanese while the recent production Classic Series 70's Jazzes were Mexican, even though there is only a few dollars difference in the list price and the street price is about the same for either instrument. I've tried both and either is a fine instrument to have.

I wouldn't write any MIM off until I played it. This is especially true today and for the past several years. The Baja crew are truly making some great stuff! I'm pretty sure the electronics on the MIM stuff will come much closer to sounding like a USA 70's instrument stock than a Japanese bass.

I personally know two people with the MIM 70's Jazz and they love them. I've played them both and they are killer passive basses. If a Jazz was my thing I'd probably buy one. They long with the 50's and the Roadworn 50's P-Bass are possibly the best basses coming out of Ensenada.

The Japanese P I'd probably do a pickup and capacitor upgrade on at the least. I've not had the pickguard off one yet, but I'd probably put CTS pots in there too if they would fit. I say if they would fit because often the Japanese Fenders have mini-pots, so full size CTS pots will never fit without routing the control cavity some and the knobs won't work either with CTS pots so you have to buy new knobs also. Also the pot shafts are smaller on the Japanese ones further complicating a pot swap. The MIM stuff already has CTS pots, a Switchcraft jack plus knobs that work with USA pots and to me those are significant advantages. Japanese mass production instruments certainly do have their strong points, but historically electronics has not been one of them.

I'm familiar with the mods you describe that I'd possibly have to make to a MIJ 70s' P. I have a few SX basses that I really like and in order to do the CTS pot sway, the cavity must be routed a bit. The stock control plate still covers it all nicely so it' s not a biggie.

However, I expect to make those mods on a $150 bass, but aside from the shielding, I shouldn't have to do anything to an $800+ bass.

I wonder if GuitarCenter will let me take a control plate off a bass to look? Hmm.

There was also a US-made FSR version in Olympic White featuring a rosewood fretboard with pearloid dots and Posiflex graphite neck support rods.

You better make sure you REALLY like the tone then. Compare the stock Japanese to MIM side by side then to a USA.

Yep, that is what I plan on doing. Playing them side by side and comparing fit and finish.
I'm pretty surprised there's been no reply from a Fender rep yet.

This is an enthusiast forum, not a support forum for Fender Consumer Relations. The only time you'll hear from Fender here is when Brad posts about a new product or someone posts something completely nuts and Brad or someone else chimes in briefly.

For an "official" answer from FMIC Corporate try phoning, faxing or even mailing Fender Consumer Relations. Here you go:
Fender Musical Instruments Corporation
Attn: Consumer Relations Dept.
8860 E. Chaparral Road, Suite 100
Scottsdale, AZ 85250

Telephone: (480) 596-7195

Fax: (480) 367-5262

E-mail: consumerrelations@fender.com

If I gave you bad info, do let me know.

Thanks very much, brotherdave. It was very nice of you to type all that up.

Being that this is a forum on the official Fender website, I assumed this was their "official forum." Odd thing that it isn't. I will email them just for kicks, to see if I get a reply.

I will post their reply, if any, in this thread. Heres' what I sent them. Very straightforward:

Quote:
Are the '70s Precision Basses Made in Japan or elsewhere? In reference to Fender part number Model : 0266202305 is this bass
made in Japan or made in Mexico? Thanks for answering this simple
question.

Hopefully I get a straightforward answer and not a "All applicable product information may be found on each product's page on our website. Thank you." type answer.

The '70s P-Bass is currently available with a fretted bound tuxedo neck.

Actually there's no plan for a fretless version with an unlined rosewood or maple fretboard.

If you're referring to the new Classic Series 70's P-Bass with the maple neck with black inlays, then yes, its made in Japan. Played one this weekend at a local shop.
