I have a 75 P Bass in superb condition except when turning the Tone adjustment knob, you get this static scratchy sound as the knob turns. I originally thought this may be dust in the Pot but an authorized Fender repair outlet checked it out and the good news was it was adjusting the tone really well but there was nothing he could do to fix the static scrachy sound. My question is does anyone know of a possible fix? If not, should
I try and replace it with a mid 70's tone pot or would any PBass pot suffice?

Any knowledgable advice is appreciated.

Try some contact cleaner before replacing the pot. Sometime dust or dirt gets inside those thing causing noise like that. If that don't work try to get a replacement pot that Fender sells, at least they use too

He's right! This is an old Electronics Tech trick that works very well.

Go to Radio Shack and get some tuner cleaner, push the little straw into the spray button and squirt a little bit into the back of the pot and rotate it vigorously a few times. Look for a slot where the leads come out of the pot and squirt it in there, or any opening in the back of the pot. Heck, I'd clean them all while I had the pickguard off. Do not use any oil like stuff (WD-40, 3-in-1, etc.) as they leave residue and attract dirt and make the problem worse. Might also wear eye protection as this stuff comes out quick and can get in your eyes.

If the problem persists, the pot is worn out and needs to be replaced, which is definitely possible since it's a '75.

If you know what resistance the pot is (500k, 250k, 100k, etc.) any similar style pot (shaft size, threaded bushing, etc.) that fits the hole and the knob will work. You can use an ohmmeter to determine the resistance if it's not printed on the pot. Check out my posting about audio taper (A) and linear taper (B) pots, as that is another important consideration for the operation of your tone control.

Here's a link to the cleaner:

BTW, This stuff will clean any pot, slider, or switch on guitars, boards, amps, radios, etc.
Just make sure all power is off when you use it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info boys. I will definitely try the cleaner and if that fails, I will look for a replacement part.
