Hey, guys!

This bass:

http://alberta.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell ... Z346389754

Has come up for sale in my area. I'm really interested, and I've been talking to the seller a little.

Apparently the pick guard, volume and ton pots, and tuners are all original. I'm not sure about the bridge?

He claims the neck and body are from '58.

What do you guys think... real deal?

Thanks!

Neck in damn fine shape for 1958, logo was obviously replaced. I mean if the body was refinished because it was in bad shape then wouldnt the neck be in bad shape too? Ask him to send you a picture of neck and body markings.

The body looks like it might be old but who could tell? The rest of it looks like parts. The neck looks like my MIM Roadworn. Looks kind of like Dimarzios. You need bigger pictures to post. If it is a 58 body and it plays nice and sounds really good it COULD be a decent deal for that price--- I would never influence anyone either way - not intentionally. I'd have to hold it in my hands and play it. Stuff like the way the neck fits down in the body and alot of other little things would need to be looked at. Is there anyone who can check it out before you buy it? Maybe Brother Dave can check it out if he's a pilot or something. :)

The headline on this ad says VINTAGE FENDER PRECISION BASS and that certainly is truth in advertising as it delivers reparts from several different vintages all in one instrument. This is probably a parts bass, including recent reissue parts, 80's at the earliest aftermarket pickups as pointed out and it is a player class instrument at best and an outright fraud at the worst. Only way to know for sure is to examine it and know what to look for when you do. This has what might be a 57/58 Reissue gold anodized pickguard. If it was the original pickguard on the body then there would be holes for the pickup cover and tugbar/finger-rest screws drilled into the body and it appears these holes are not drilled. The decal is probably wrong as pointed out and possibly counterfeit, which is illegal. The bridge is new. The cigarette burn on the headstock is a nice touch though, just like 1959! Funny that you'd re-do the headstock and not fix the burn isn't it? None of the hardware looks vintage. I'd have to remove the neck from the body and get the pot codes to start figuring anything out on this however I'm pretty sure the owner of this "Vintage Fender Precision would not let me. He'd be afraid I might damage something of course.

That's sort of what I thought.

It's sort of one of those things where you get excited because the price seems to good to be true. But the truth is, to good to be true almost always is just that, you know?

I'd never be able to sell it-- just like with some real Fenders I have.

I looked at those pics again. It looks like an old Fender body but except for the pickups (which is anyones guess) the parts look like they came from a classic 50's MIM or a Roadworn.
