I have a fretless PJ style bass but cannot determine it's provenance. Originally white, the body was stripped to natural. The head has no writing and does not look to be refinished. All of the pegs say made in Japan and the e-string peg is adjustable (as per PJ style I think). The bridge says "Badass Bass II" (not a good sign I think). It has active pickups (they are marked EMG on the outside). I removed the neck to look for any identifying marks and did not find a serial number. What I did find (on the body) was a black stamp saying "PJ-555" and a red stamp "A". Is this just a mish-mash of parts or could it be an original neck and body with some different parts? Any insight anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have pics and can share them if needed. Thanks

I think it's a modded MIJ Jazz Bass Special, the precursor to the MIM "Duff" signature Precision Bass.

If the P neck pickup is reversed and the circuit is active, then it's likely a "Power" Jazz Bass Special.

In that case the neck would have 22 frets instead of 20.

Someone has installed a set of EMGs, a Hipshot D-Tuner and a LeoQuan BadAss II bridge.

I'm quite sure the fretless neck is also not stock.

PJ-555 stamping and routing for active components ID's it as a Power Jazz Special. I'm betting that it is an aftermarket neck due no decal. But if so the neck paddle should have been marked by the maker as "licensed by Fender" unless it is lawsuit era or someone sanded it off. The instrument serial would have been on the original decal. I agree that the D-tuner, pickups and bridge are not stock. The body is basswood and should be reasonably light weighing about 5 pounds.
