I just recieved an American Standard Precision bass last week, and I want to look into possibly getting a humbucker installed in the bridge position like the old deluxe p basses. Is this a bad idea, and if not who should I go to to make that happen?

If you are in Maryland, I know a guy who can do this, no problem, for a nice price.

It will make the bass worth less moneywise in the long run. If you have to do it I would put a Fender type pickup in it so in the future it can be replaced if need be. It's up to you but in my humble opinion it's a bad idea all together. You did ask for opinions right?

Why would you want to put another pick up in it anyway? You could always get a Jazz bass. It has two pickups.

Bad idea as far as long term value of your P-Bass is concerned. But you can do it if you want.

You will likely wind up moving the jack to the lower bout and many players don't like it there. For about the same cost as hacking up your stock USA P-Bass you can buy a used P/J model like the P-Bass Special. I think I'd just do that. Those bridge humbuckers are pretty pricey. You'll need a new Deluxe style pickguard too. Figure several hundred dollars for labor. There will be other parts required also. So it is about a $400 job if you have someone decent do it. $450 buys a good used P-Bass Special. To me buying a used P/J is a no-brainer over modding a USA P-Bass.

I've had a bunch of basses and have never though routeing one out for another pickup was a good idea. I've seen what it does to the price too many times.
