Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I'm about to get my hands on a 1997 American Deluxe Presicion with a Badass bridge and a SPB-3 pickup and I want to know some things about the construction of the instrument. The serial is N723xxxx. Is the body one-piece or two-piece? And what kind of wood the body is made of? Alder or ash?

If you post a couple of pics it might be helpful for us to further examine your bass.

If it's an alder body showing a fancy wood grain in the top and the back, then it's a solid alder with ash veneers.

Yeah. Photos are needed. A one or even two piece body blank almost certainly would have stayed in Corona in 1997. When the wood blank shipments came in at Corona back then they were graded and sorted and the better blanks went to USA production while the lesser quality blanks were designated for MIM production. Agree that if it looks like one piece of wood with a translucent finish then it is possibly veneer. Also back then the bodies and necks were still being cut in the USA on the same CNC machines as the USA ones and were then trucked to Ensenada for finishing and assembly. It is entirely possible it is a very good piece of wood. The pecking order for wood selection then put the American Deluxe instruments right behind the Custom Shop and the American Deluxes would have gotten the very best of the regular production blanks.

Yeh I think Parchment guards were stock. My 98 P D-Lux was one piece. I had a 97 and I 'm pretty sure that was the last year for the heavier tuners,,, the lighter tuners came in 98.(pretty sure) My 97 had the neck dive but the 98 did not. I got rid of the 97 in partial because of the dive. It was pretty bad.

that bass in the pic looks like alder. The ash would have some dark grain that would prob be noticeable even in little pics like that I think.

From what I know of the d-lux's I had I would have never changed the pickups. I thought they sounded good.

I had a hard time seeing the abalone dots on a dark stage. (on rosewood board) the extra frets caused me to have to check position alot. I'm used to 20.

I finally got it! It seems to be a one piece alder body isn't it? And it feels lighter than my previous bass!! (a SUB Sterling)

I don't have a good camera to capture further details so this is it...
I'm in love with the fretboard and the sound!! And what a sound is that... Can't wait to plug it in tomorrow at my band's rehearsal in an SVT3!

that's alder and it looks like one piece. nice bass. The deluxe bodies are smaller than the american std that year-(didn't know if you knew that).

that bass is way better than a sub sterling IMO-

Both basses feature a 22-fret neck. :)

They were smaller until 2009. Fender has redesigned the bodies in 2010 to match the new deluxe 21-fret compound radius necks.

you have to admit that it is a job to keep up with all the makes, models, changes, etc. etc. that Fender does. I've kind of drifted off into the bunch of basses I have. I can tell you anything you want to know about them but,,, I can't come close on most of the Mex, Squire, Japanese , Korean, Mogadishu, etc, that's out there now. I can tell you how my 83 P bass has a slightly different shaped heel than my 03 P bass though.

Thank you guys for all the info and nice words! Anyway, I have one more question. From the photo can someone tell if the neck is a flamed maple?
