I just bought a 62' Reissue P-Bass. Date stamped July 21, 1989. Serial Number V0482**. Rosewood board, Black body, aftermarket pick guard, cloth wrapped wiring, all shielding present.
My question is; the paint is "nitrocellulose-razed" and is showing sea foam green at the wear and chip marks. I plan to play this bass until it turns completely green but I am wondering if someone repainted it at the factory or after it was sold. I have inspected it closely and see that the black paint was professionally applied. Is there any way I can find out more about his? I can provide photos upon request.

It all sounds a little "not right". I think this is a job for Brother Dave.

I don't understand what "razed" means. Perhaps you meant "crazed." That is an expression for the nitro clear coat finish checking.

Anyway, paint-overs were historically done for two reasons. First, sometimes a paint-over was done over a Sunburst that wasn't up to par and as a general rule this was seldom if ever done for quality control purposes over solid colors. Secondly when Fender went the Custom Color route for the upcharge to pick a custom color starting about 1961 they would often fill the order by repainting to order a body that had already been painted another color. Since good Sunburst finishes were highly prized it was usually a solid color body that would be pulled for that, or perhaps a less than perfect Sunburst they were going to repaint anyway. It was faster to reshoot an already finished body than make one up which meant they could deliver faster.

I know those two things were going on at one time. However, I've not heard of either of these going on with V series instruments under FMIC. I could see a messed up Sunburst getting re-shot but not a solid, unless it was to fill a custom order.

So it could have been a color change prior to shipment for some reason such as a custom color order. I agree that is doesn't sound quite right unless that is what happened. Of course it could be factory, but the V series are highly revered and quite collectible as they were considered the best things Big F was doing at the time. I'd like to think they were taking more care than CBS. But perhaps they weren't and followed the previous practice to fill a custom order.

Most of the Pre-CBS factory paint-overs I've seen were Strats. However I've ran across a few exceptions to that such as Herbie Flowers infamous 59/60 Jazz Bass which is Lake Placid Blue over Fiesta Red from the factory. Why that happened I don't know. Mr. Flowers claims he bought it at Manny's in NYC in October of 1959. It was one of the first J-Basses. As I recall he even can tell you the exact date but I can't remember it right now. I am sure he has documented the date though because it has been gone over my many experts.

The problem was quite different in the early 1960's in Europe where the UK distributor was importing perfectly good finished Fender guitars and no matter what color they were the distributor (Selmer I think was the distributor) repainted perhaps hundreds of them Fiesta Red when they arrived. Again, many if not nearly all of these were Sunburst under the Fiesta Red. This was done because of incredibly high demand due to Hank Marvin playing a Fiesta Red Strat which Shadows bandmate Cliff Richard gifted him. These re-shoots show up from time to time. There could be thousands, but more likely hundreds. Nobody knows for sure how many.

This may sound dumb, but could they be doing double shots on the reissues to mimic the double shot original basses of the '60's?

I would guess not. But I wonder what may be under my black finish now. Have to wait for the first paint chip. Ha ha

When I bought mine in 2006, the website showed that the only available finishes were burst and white, I think.

I asked my salesman if he could ask Fender if they had a black one, and - voila- they sent him one a couple weeks later (dated same year on the pocket and neck butt).

Curious business.

I agree, it is a curious business. I plan on taping a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper to my right arm when I'm gigging so it will wear through the green more quickly.

Hi gstessman,

In the late 80s, I bought a brand new (1987) US 62 reissue Strat finished in Vintage white. As soon as the dings started appearing, as they inevitably do, I was surprised that my Strat was Surf green underneath. It has puzzled me since why Vintage white would be sprayed over Surf green... one of life's many mysteries, I suppose.
