I am trying to return my 75 P bass back to it's original state . I bought it second hand in 1979. The body has screw holes for the thumb rest both above and below the strings so I am confused as to where it was positioned when new. The original pick guard is missing.
The bass was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1975 according to a search on the serial number.
Can anyone tell me when the thumb rest was moved from the bottom to the top please.

yes I am new to bass playing. I'm just wondering how would a thumb rest work if its placed below the g string. I get how it reast your thumb if its placed above the e (obviosly).

1975 P Bass has the thumbrest above the E string. (ref.) The Fender Bass, by J.W. Black and Albert Molinaro By the way, that was the first bass I owned, bought in 1975, I was in High School and my Mom made out a check for 300.00 and gave it to my music teacher who in turn surprised me with it. It was White with a black pickguard.

When located below the G string it is often called a "Tugbar" or "Finger rest.

Not my words, someone elses'

Back when Leo Fender designed his precision bass, he had the idea that players would play his new invention with their thumb. He therefore put a fingerrest, or finger anchor, under the g-string. Remember Leo had the upright bass tone and the upright player in mind.

Now - although his design, the precision bass, was "spot on" in many ways, players very soon found that playing with the index finger (and/or other fingers) was better - the fingerrest had no longer any purpose. Still, Fender basses through the '60 are equipped with this plastic thing. Players usually removed it. In the '70, Fender moved the fingerrest to a position above the e-string, now called a thumbrest, allthough it was the same black plastic thing. Players rest their thumb on the pup, OR on the thumbrest for a fuller, more "necky" tone. Most players, I believe, removed it even then.
