Hello! Im new to the board here. Just wanted to some advice from the enthusiasts. I have a 1980 Fender Precision 4 string bass in Sunburst in excellent condition. Im the original owner and am interested in selling it. I just wasn't sure what price to set on a vintage guitar as such. I plan on using ebay and want to know what to expect. I appreciate any and all insight. Thanks CK :D

i think it is really a question of the condition of the bass and if the electronics,Pups and hardware are original or at least genuine fender replacements, There are plenty of examples on the web for researching this subject, try e bay in the United ? kingdom as well as the US e bay, You state that you are the original purchaser ? in which case you may still have the original tags and bill, I´m not sure if 1980 was a good year for fenders brother dave would know more, you can at least google brother daves website where he has tons of info on this subject which seems to crop up on this forum with alarming regularity, unless you are strapped for cash i would keep it and leave it to the grandkids...best of luck

If it is ALL ORIGINAL except strings and is in excellent condition then it might APPRAISE for $2000 to $2500. A realistic expectation of an actual final value sale price is in the ballpark of $1,100 to $1,400 depending on where and how you sell it. Rudy's on Times Square in NYC has one just like yours in excellent to near mint condition. You could call them and ask what they want for theirs and if your is really in as good condition as you say, then that will be a big help as yours is very close to it. They will be slightly negotiable on the actual sale price. Figure that there is about 20 percent play in the asking price at the MOST. If you deduct 20% to 25% from the asking price at Rudy's that should give you a good starting point.

Lots of things can contribute to escalating the value such as hang tags, case candy, original sales receipt, condition of the original hard case, celebrity ownership, etc. If even one screw has been changed on it, then it is not collector class and that is a value hit. But on a 1980 at this time the difference between collector and player class isn't all that much. Collectors are mostly going for 60's stuff right now and the pre 64 stuff is still the most valuable.

Right now is a gosh awful time to sell even a pre-64 instrument. One thing is for sure, the longer you keep it the more it will be worth as the vintage market is certainly going to rebound. The collector market had been showing signs of life over the past 6 months after an abysmal 3 years, but seems to have plateaued again in the past 6 weeks and instruments like a 1980 P-Bass just aren't in demand except as player class instruments. The market has been so stagnant that some buyers have been able to buy a collector caliber 1980 P-Bass at a player class price.

Everyone thinks all Fender instruments appreciate and are a good investment but when adjusted for inflation a 1980 P-Bass is not worth as much now as the sale price was in 1980. Sale price in 1980 was about $550. Adjusted for inflation that amount of money is worth about 1,630 dollars today. You would be extremely fortunate to clear $1,630 in a sale of a 1980 P-Bass.

Pre-64's were good investments in the 1960's. Today not so much as they have appreciated about all they are going to and any further increases will mainly be due to inflation. Any that have survived this long are likely to be well taken care of so they won't be getting any scarcer.
