I imagine it could be done but the raw materials alone are so expensive that it would be prohibitively costly and impractical to make strings from these materials.

I'd pay $100 for some strings that would last a year- IF they sounded the same as the day I put them on. No I don't leave strings on a bass now for a year like alot of people do. Mine go dead after about 10 or so gigs. By dead I mean they lose thier ring and honk or they weaken to a point that they no longer make the sound I want. I'm pretty demanding of strings as far as that goes. No flubby muddy sound allowed.

I've never used them but, a lot of guys have raved about Thomastik. Lots of claims that they last a long time. There's always the boiling thing too, never tried that either.

Interesting idea about alternative materials. I work in a heavy industrial atmosphere, I'm gonna have to look around!

Titanium bass strings? Wow. That would be cool! Teflon coat them and Mr. Nylon would be having a seizure!

If you use rounds I suggest trying ONE set of Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass strings. If they don't last you dang near a year before you notice any change I'll be really surprised. I like them better than the Jazz Flats because the tension is more medium so they aren't as floppy as the Jazz Flats. The TI PowerBass set will last just as long if not in fact longer than the TI Jazz Flats. The set on my #1 bass is over two years old and yes they have lost a tad of zing but still beat a new set of anything else. (Do not "cheap out" and get the IN344 "Infeld Superalloy" set as they are not in the same league.)

What I don't understand is how the cost of a 50 inch imported TV has fallen by 50% while these Austrian made strings have gone up over 100% over the same period of time. Glad I stocked up on TI Jazz Flats and PowerBass sets several years ago. I think TI strings have outperformed gold and silver as an investment in US dollars. If you can't bring yourself to spend that much on a string set, I can't blame you one bit. But if you do try them I think you'll find the PowerBass set is the longest lasting roundwound. Actually for me they became far more cost efficient than monthly replacement of Ernie Ball Regular Slinkies, which is what I was doing before I tried the TI EB344's.

I'll have to see who carries those strings around here.
