All,
My first post here and hoping you can help. I'm actually looking for a pup replacement for the MIJ Squier version of the Lyte. I believe it is the same dimensions except it is passive. I understand that dimensions are a bit unique and info is hard to come by. I plan to measure them but just wanted to see if there was any first hand experience. As money is tight, I'm looking at the Dimarzio DP126 and the Bill Lawrence P/J setup. Thanks.

Here is a link to my bass along with a pic of the MIJ add from '94 (see the last page at bottom)

Welcome to the forum. I hope you are talking about the WILDE Pickups by Bill Lawrence and not the pickups branded simply Bill Lawrence Pickups. Mr. Lawrence sold off the old company a long time ago and they continue to churn out the old design. I'm not saying they are bad by any means, just not the latest Bill Lawrence design. The WILDE pickups by Bill Lawrence are likely to be Wilde Bill's last new P/J designs and I have really enjoyed mine. They are not wax potted, but sealed in a Lucite type resin. The Lucite potting means they should last nearly forever. They are wound to vintage specs, not particularly hot but they deliver a very authentic stock USA Fender-esque tone.

The thing with them is they come in only one size. The P-pickup should fit but you may have to do some routing to get the J-pickup to fit. The reason they are so affordable is because they are not custom made but off the shelf.

It might be possible to remove the existing pickups, send them to someone like Curtis Novak or Lindy Fralin and have them custom make a P/J set as a drop in replacement of the same exact dimensions. Naturally you can choose stock, underwound or overwound to whatever extent you want. This custom build of course is not going to be the most economical option.

There are links to Mr. Novak and Mr. Fralin on my site. You can phone them and ask. They are both experts.

Brother Dave,
Thanks for those tips. I wasn't aware of the history of Lawrence pups. Thankfully, it appears I am barking up the right tree as the website I have been looking at say Wilde at the top. Thanks also for the tips on a custom job. As finances are a consideration, I'll probably keep that as a backup plan. Thanks again, and it anyone else has experience with the Lyte or additional tips they are warmly appreciated.
