You can tell when the body was made by taking off the neck and examining the body's neck pocket for a stamped/handwritten date.

You can tell when the neck was made by taking off the neck and examining the butt end of the neck for a stamped/handwritten date the neck was made.

For selling and collection verification, this is almost as definitive as it gets.

You can also examine electronics for tell-tale codes, etc. But someone else here would have to tell the details of that. I am not sure.

Good advice in the post just above mine regarding production coding and locations. Some but NOT ALL potentiometers and capacitors have a week and year code such as 1809 - which would be the 18th week of 2009 as an example.

An "N" serial prefix is most likely not a 'Crafted in Japan' Fender unless someone at the factory applied the wrong decal set. There are so many fakes out there made by hole-in-the-wall "craftsmen" in Indonesia, that they will do just about anything to make their trash look as real as possible.

You can verify details yourself in the link below as well as in the Fender Support tab at the top of this page.

Check the DECALS. Look specifically for a discoloration of the "Crafted in Japan" background. Actual Japanese Fender "Crafted" decal background fields are absolutely clear, while most do-it-yourself decals are a bit on the pale yellow side.

Another possibility is that someone may have added the "Crafted" decal to a regular Japan made Fender just to get the price up another 20 percent. A standard Japanese Fender with an "N" prefix places it in the 1993-94 time frame, but the "Crafted" decal is most likely a factory mistake or an add on.

There are a couple other possibilities, but most times you can check the hidden date codes and see if things are all correct - THEN compare those to the headstock serial and country info - in most cases you will see that someone messed with the guitar to increase it's value.

P. Luke speak with straight tongue and the wind of wisdom. Just because it has a serial and a decal does not make it legitimate. You can put lipstick on a buffalo, but it is still a buffalo.

Thanks for providing those links.
I bought my first bass, Fender P-Bass, in 1978. The store owner told me it was a "repo" and I always thought it was a 1977 model. I used the links you provided and looked it up. I found out it's a 1975 model! :o

Here's the info I found out;
Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1975

Fender: Fullerton
The Fullerton factory opened in 1946, Fullerton California with the first major electric solid body guitar production began in 1950 with the Broadcaster (later known as the Telecaster). Sold in 1965 to CBS who in 1985 sold Fender to a group of private investors the plant was not included in that sale and was subsequently closed.

I played this bass exclusively until 1992 when I bought a Fender Jazz 5 string with active elec, MIA, which I still use as my primary bass today.
I am currently cleaning & adding new strings to the P Bass. It still plays and sounds great. I am going to start using it every now then, just 'cause I can! :D

Here's a "before" pic.

I may post an "after" pic when I get it cleaned up and new strings put on.

Thanks again for providing those links.
