My initial thought was to mail Brother Dave direct on this, but I thought that this might well be of benefit to other people, too, and of interest to others.

I've just bought a Sansamp Bass Driver Deluxe.

Passive P, flats, Littlemark III and Berg NV 412.

The thing is 'hissing' like a rattlesnake, even on some of the 'pre-sets' in the manual, like 'SVT' emulation.

I think I'm perhaps missing something here, because I appreciate that practically the entire bass-playing world loves it, but right now, my old Zoom B2 does the job far better without even a trace of hiss!!

Any thoughts, please, Brother Dave or anyone else?

I'd be really grateful if you could perhaps share a few of your favourite settings as well, please.

Many thanks.

I'm sorry no one has replied to you. You can send brother dave an e-mail at his site, he'll answer.

I'm perplexed by the problem, I've had one for a few years now and absolutely no problems. Maybe you just got a bad one. Either way, if you bought it local or on the internet, or call Tech 21, I have and they were great.

Good luck.

You're welcome.

Just a thought. The outlet you're using to power the Bass Diver, are you using it to power your amp too. If so, are you getting any noise?

I'm grasping for straws here.

No, my friend- I'm running the BDDI on battery power.

Much appreciated though: I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it eventually!

Yes; unit is brand new, as is battery.

Maybe because one of the leads I'm using is the standard Fender one that came with my bass, while the other is Elixir?

Should I perhaps invest in a better lead?

No. I don't want to hassle him and I'm sure he'll be along here before too long...!

Hassle? He's always available to help someone with a legitimate question, as yours is. I'm really interested in how you get this resolved, I'm stumped.

Where is your output level set? I use Tech21 boxes (mainly for guitar), and they can be noisy above a certain point. I find of the output is above about 3 O'clock, it can get hissy.

It is of course possible that you may have a bad chip in your Bass Driver pedal. The factory settings work great for me and I have 2 Foster horns in my Avatar Cabs gig stack. I can induce hiss by boosting treble and/or gain to unnatural sounding levels though. I can do that even without the Sans Amp plugged in! However none of the Sans Amp manual's recommended settings will produce any hiss on my amp or in recording situations at all for me with a passive P-Bass. The Bergantino 412 is a fine cab by the way! Since it has no horn it should if anything have LESS hiss than my stack, not more!

One thing to note before saying for sure that you have a bad Sans Amp is that when using the Bass Driver you should be patching DIRECTLY into the power amp stage of the amp completely bypassing the preamp. Are you doing that? It says to do that in the Bass Driver manual, but I've noticed that many people don't do that and instead plug the output of the Sans Amp into the instrument input which is not what they should be doing.

I think on the Little Mark III there is not an input labeled Power Amp Input but there is an Effects Return Input which is pretty much the same thing. Try that input instead of the instrument input. The MASTER volume on the amp will still work, but the PREAMP GAIN won't. Turn the MASTER volume all the way down and gradually turn it up to get an idea of the right setting. This bypasses the tonal coloration of the preamp completely.

What I think is happening is that the preamp in the Little Mark is attenuating the signal too much and adding extra EQ and more drive that actually isn't needed. Also if you are using any compression, it should come IN FRONT of the Bass Driver. Otherwise it will emphasize noise during periods when you are not playing anything.

Since the Bass Driver has an XLR output AND the Little Mark III's I've used in the past had an XLR input you can also try using a microphone cable to connect the pedal and amp. However when doing this the amp's preamp will again be online.

Even though you have the knobs set "FLAT" on the amp's tone controls, know that ALL bass amps have bass oriented EQ voicing. "FLAT" is not actually "FLAT" on most bass amps. They all have "flavored" EQ voicings built into the preamp.

The Bass Drivers were designed to go straight into the power amp or into a mixer for recording, not into the Preamp stage of a bass amp where the tone gets colored even further.

Another way to check the Sans Amp is to patch the XLR output into a mixer and check for hiss again. If it hisses into the mixer then something is definitely amiss.

The first thing I'd do is to give the Effects Return input on the Little Mark III a try and post the result. That is a really nice rig and a really nice pedal. There has to be a way to get them to play together nicely!

Hi Brother Dave and nice to hear from you: I hope you're keeping well.

I'm plugging into the effects return on the back of my amp.

It's not the driver itself that's kicking out the hiss; it's the sound of the driver coming through my cab.

It's not omni-present: it's more apparent on settings like 'Bassman' and 'Distorted' and as I'm altering the positions of some of the knobs (like Drive, Presence and Level).

I appreciate that Level can have a propensity for doing this, but on some settings (notably those I've just described), I've got the background hissing even when I'm at unity gain.

For the avoidance of any doubt here, I am talking about at-home practise levels and notwithstanding this, I actually really do like the different sounds I'm able to get a great deal!

My saved settings are:-

1. Fat tube
2. Bassman
3. SVT
4. Reggae
5. Flip-top
6. Distorted.

It manifests most on 'Bassman' and 'Distorted', so it would seem, at least, to be those settings where the Treble Control is, relatively, higher.

Is this simply the normal, expected response and am I asking for too much to expect total silent operation like with the Zoom B2?

I don't get hiss on mine unless I go looking for trouble. I don't use either of those settings giving you trouble. I'll check them out on mine. Since you don't have a horn this really might be a problem with your pedal. email Tech 21. Let them know you have an issue and see what they suggest.

You can try flipping the cables and try the XLR out from the Sansamp to the XLR input on your amp if you have a good mic cable around. But I really don't think it is the cables.

Put the best cable between the Sansamp and the MarkBass and see if it still does it without even having an instrument plugged into the Sansamp.

The Behringer Sansamp knockoff I have, the BDI-21, has far more hiss than the Sansamp but is still usable at reasonable settings.
