I have a Fender Precision that I bought used in 1980, based on the Neck Plate 634475 it is a 1976.

It is not all original and I am currently refurbishing it and have some pictures posted here:

If anyone can provide me with any additional information about this bass and maybe how much it is worth and what I can do to improve the appearance and playability and value, that would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Guido,

Wow ! I know I've looked on eBay and have seen some mid-70s go for around that much too. I just wasn't sure how much having all original equipment and overall condition would impact it. Since mine is not all original I'm trying to make sure any changes I do won't 'devalue' it. And I'm not looking to sell either .. I've been playing this for so long I'd be lost without it.

If you are selling it, you will always find people that low ball you or people taht are looking to get a bass that's already set up they way they want it the bass to be. The value of your bass is only as high as the buyer thinks it's a good value. Make changes that you can put back to oe spec if you want. I personally would do what I want to my bass(es) and not worry about the value unless I was selling it. That's why you have your bass right, to play not to sell...

Hi Rez,

That's right, I've had this too long to consider selling, matter of fact I couldn't bring myself to buy another bass because it would probably just collect dust as I tend to play my P-bass all the time. I did get some information that based on the neck stamp, the bass was made the 42nd week of 1975. I'm going with a Tung Oil finish as I think using even the aerosol lacquers is beyond my skillset, I got new EMG select replacement pickups, new pick-guard, new knobs, and a new bridge that is supposedly a replacement but looks like it requires 2 new screw holes ... so I may just try to polish up the old bridge and reinstall it. My previous refinish effort 20 years ago (used a belt sander to take off the checked original finish) did alter the contour of the upper and lower cutaways ... so its already 'altered'. As the commercial goes, new pickguard $35, new pickups $23, New Knobs $16, playing your refurbished b-bass ... priceless!

I couldn't have agreed with you more. With the EMG Selects do you have to put on new knobs? I had to with my EMG's cuz you have to put on the bigger ones, so new knobs they are. The old "tophat" knobs went on the Squier. I'm planning on putting EMG HZ this summer on the VM. I also like the tung oil finish, post some pix, I'd like to see it. :)
