WHY ? The most obvious would be the preference of a thinner neck or preference of the block and binding at one time only available on the JazzBass,I like the thicker neck on the p-bass that allows me to use any type or gauge strings without having to worry about tension issue's and then when I play my jazzbass with its jazzbass neck its a breeze to play and much easier to fly around being used to the p-bass neck.
For Me,others may differ.

The Surf Green bass is a 1974 P bass. It has a Jazz neck on it. The reason is because it was made that way by Fender. It plays like a dream and sounds excellent.

Cool. Thanks for the info and posting the pic. I am toying with the idea of putting a J neck on my Pbass.

The 74 has a little different type of growl than a regular P with a P neck-- at least mine does. It sounds more like a P than a J . Probubly because it's a P. Plus it has a Poplar body. I can't bring myself to take it out of the house.

Stroker, nice '74 P. Is the finish factory custom color?

Why bastardize your P bass or J Bass for the neck? If you look around in the early 1970's Fender used to market the P basses with "A" jazz sized necks. You might be able to find one with a few nicks & dings in sunburst for a decent price. Here's mine but it's near mint Fire Mist Gold Factory custom color.

Were they made in Rosewood, or only maple?

Not absolutely sure but all the "A" nacks I have seen on the early 1970's Precisions were maple.

BP jelly -- the finish on the P bass is a refin done in 1996. I got the bass in 79 and it was pretty roadworn. In 79 it was no big deal to refin a guitar. It was refinned to white in 79. I played it untill 1996 and it was worn pretty good. I was tired of the white so it went to surf. I've hardly touched it since 96. Wow that's 16 years!!! Man -- time flies!!! HA!
