I have a Bass and a Guitar with electrical problems. Now that I am plugged into a powerful AMP I am beginning to think that my cord has problems of its own.

I need suggestions for a high quality guitar cord that won't have any issues that I can buy to help me diagnose the problems with the guitar. Also what is a good brand Jack and Pot cleaner?

Any expensive cable will likely be a good one. The shorter the cable the better, too, for sound integrity. As for pot and jack cleaner, if you cannot find contact spray cleaner, then starting fluid in a spray can will work as well (just try not to spray your guitar's finish). :)

Starter fluid???

That's new one on me!
Have you actually used it yourself and achieve positive results?

That's cheaper than the Rat-Shack cleaner, if it works as well or better.

I wonder what Bother Dave thinks about this?...
I don't know him personally, but I've read him for years, so his input would matter a lot to me.... He's never steered me wrong yet. :)

As far as the O.P. - you didn't specify what you had for a bass.
Is it a classic or vintage bass?
If not, and the new cord doesn't improve the problem, go with Switchcraft jacks and pots! :)

As far as a cleaner goes this cleaner got real high reviews. The cleaner in the top link is the same stuff that Stewart-MacDonald sells.

Our band has always used the 'Gold' Peavy 10 or 12 gauge guitar to amp cords. They last longer than just about anything else out there and have a warranty.

Regarding cleaner for pots, we use CRC Electronic Contact Cleaner available in the Automotive section of most ACE Hardware stores. It is electronically neutral and also lasts a long time when applied correctly.

For contact cleaner I would only use products manufactured specifically for electrical contact cleaning. Spray Starter Fluid for engines might work great for all I know, but that stuff is loaded with ether so it is downright explosive. Plus I don't know what the non-gaseous components will do to electronics. Two types I've used with good results are Deoxit brand pump spray and Radio Shack. The Radio Shack aerosol works fine on guitar and amp pots, is at every Radio Shack Store and is reasonable. Deoxit is more expensive and for me it is harder to find. But honestly they both work fine. The Radio Shack spray is labeled TUNER CONTROL CLEANER AND LUBRICANT. It is really cheap as a huge can is $12. It also comes with the little extension tube. Don't lose that extension tube. The aerosol can from Radio Shack only requires short bursts, maybe 2 or 3 per pot. One can should be a "lifetime" supply unless you maintain dozens of instruments or are a tech. I think about all this stuff is flammable and hazardous if abused.

For instrument cables, I've had good luck with M.I.T. Ripcord (my favorite, but a discontinued product), Monster Bass and Planet Waves. All three have a lifetime guarantee, which is part of the reason they are so expensive. Of the two still available, the Planet Waves cables I have seem more acoustically transparent than the Monster but the Monster is a really good cable and very durable. The M.I.T. Ripcords are TOTALLY AMAZING but incredibly hard to find since they stopped marketing them about 3 years ago. I only have one of them. I keep an item watch setup for them on eBay but they rarely appear these days. The Bass Place in Peoria AZ has a special deal on the Monster Bass 21 foot straight to angle cables for $29.95 SHIPPED to USA addresses which is $20 under about anyone else online that I can find. http://www.thebassplace.com/accessories-cables-c-4_21?zenid=5ffe25a0f95430e7c89d5611f4e9cc3b
I've also used the old Fender Electrovolt series cables for practice use and out of five I've bought only ONE totally stopped working. Not bad for a $10 cable. I think those were made by Whirlwind for Fender. I have no experience at all with the new Fender cables, but they look vastly different from the old Fender cables.

Switchcraft brand jacks is all I'll buy. For Fender instrument pots all I buy is C.T.S. Both Switchcraft and CTS are OEM suppliers for Fender USA and MIM passive instruments. You can buy either as a Fender replacement part or buy CTS or Switchcraft brands and pay less for the same exact thing. I usually get them from Guitar Parts Resource.

And Stoker, if there isn't a product called "JACKPOT CLEANER" there should be!

Yes I've used it in a pinch and it worked excellent (Starting Fluid). It evaporates almost instantly too! Just dont smoke while using it, geniuses!!!! LOL It didn't harm the finish of the guitar, or melt plastic or anything like that either. PS many items you buy for one purpose are just other products that have been re-purposed. ;) Starting Fluid cleaned the scratchy-ness right out of those pots! And left them turning nice and smooth too.
