To me, any difference in tone between the two is minimal, and with proper EQ'ing, can be elimintaed entirely as to become irrelevant. At that point, my personal preference fpr maple is strictly a matter of aesthetics.

I prefer maple myself. I guess it is because I started off on a precision bass years ago with a maple neck. Rosewood is definitely warmer. I like to slap and I like a lot of funk and I think the maple gives sharper tones but at the end of the day it is all a matter of opinion.

Cheers

Jazz with rosewood. Precision with maple.

I like them both.

Anybody here ever try out a fretless maple fingerboard? I did, and I'm in love. Next purchase...

I recently put a vintage 1966 Rosewood neck on my 1988 '57 re-issue P-bass. The change in sound was dramatic. The old maple neck was very twangy by comparison. Bottom and top, but very scooped in the mids. The rosewood is much warmer, more subtle, and rounded in the bottom end. I very much prefer the rosewood. It's way more inspiring to play. I'm keeping the maple for now, but probably just for recording projects.

I've really come to the opinion that rosewood works best for the majority of what I play. I have my VM Jazz to use when the maple neck sound is what I'm after.

Now for 6 strings, I prefer maple.

My advice is to have both for when you change your mind.

Fletch, you are one of the most apritculative peeples I has ever seen!

Why yes Dave as a matter of fact I did choose to throw the exotic wood card into the mix. ..........LOL

In all seriousness though the combination of the Pau Ferro fretless fretboard coupled with Fender Flats, & Vintage pickups make this a warm sounding old school bass.. :)

Maple but mostly for aesthetic reasons, although it is also easier to see your fret markers on a dark stage.

Most of my basses have rosewood. I like the warmer sound that I get from them. I do own a couple of basses with maple fretboards but do not play them as often as the rosewood.

That's really more than I need to know. In my experience, a guitar or bass is not a collection of interchangeable parts, but an organic whole that will satisfy me musically or not. Certainly it is an impractical matter to tear the rosewood fingerboard off a neck and substitute one of maple. Fender gives the promise of doing this, with its detachable necks. The results are still unconvincing. Here are photos one of my Precisions with a rosewood fingerboard and maple fingerboard necks. The difference in tone was minute. To me, that's the test: first, did it change the sound, and, if so, did the sound change for the better?

The second question seems to be overlooked: each instrument is different in its acoustic response, and I don't know that any given alteration is ever going to be universally positive in its effect.

I like the look and feel of maple, so I'll stick with that. Should I find a maple necked instrument that I don't like, I'll take the simplest route: I won't buy it.

how were you able to change the neck on your bass?
I have a Fender Jazz Active Deluxe V w/rosewood fingerboard. I would love to change it would with a maple fingerboard.

For some reason I couldn't log on with the lpdeluxe user name, so I made up a new one as lpdeluxe1.

Anyhow, here's how you replace the neck: remove the strings, turn the bass on its face on a padded surface (a table with a large towel on it, for example), remove the four large screws on the heel plate. Holding both the neck and the body, turn the bass on its back and carefully lift the neck straight up from its slot.

Mount all hardware (tuners, string retainers, nut) on the new neck, and press it down into the slot in the body. Carefully turn it over and replace the heel plate and the neck screws. Make sure the neck is pulled into the body evenly by turning each screw a few turns, then moving on to the next one. Tighten them, restring, tune, and play.
