I finally took the plunge and bought an American Vintage ‘62 Precision Bass and I am quite disappointed that it came without the tailpiece ashtray or pickup guard mounted. On top of that it did not come with the screws or pre-drilled holes. Though it plays and sounds just as I hoped it would a major reason why I chose this model is that it is the replica of the "Funk Machine" and it just isn't the same without the ashtray and pickup guard. I am not going to drill this guitar so I will just have to find someone who will (and guarranty it). If you are considering this model you have been forewarned.

Hey Thumpin...

Thanks for the "Heads-Up" on the '62 Reissue Precision Bass. I recently got hooked on old school James Jamerson bass lines from Motown and considered ordering the 3-Tone/Tortoise/Rosewood version to double as my own "Funk Machine". Surprising that your bass arrived without Bridge and Pick-Up Covers already attached. Admittedly, I'd take off the pick-up cover since it gets in the way of my fingers. But I'd definately leave the Bridge Ashtray attached.

Can Fender make this right for you? Seems like they should. It's like buying a car and having all four tires in the trunk at delivery.

Good Luck!

I believe the reason for the pup and bridge cover not coming mounted is the fact that so many take them off right away anyhow. Odd that yours came without screws though, Thump. As far as doing it yourself, the drilling is easy, but I do understand your apprehension.

However, Any Fender Authorized Service Center would be able to do it for you and their work is covered, and your bass would still be under warranty. It wouldn't cost much either, most likely their standard hour rate as it would take but minutes to do. Where I am that's 25 bucks, wether different shops charge different labor amounts I'm unsure. I do all my own work myself, but my girlfriend is absolutley obsessed with all the work on her strat going through our local service center.

Here's the Service Center Finder link...

Good luck.

I couldn't bring myself to drill my bass either, I used velcro. Works well but, I don't play hard, just loud ans fast.

I think it's a good decision from Fender not to put them on out of the factory. You can remove them, but than you will be stuck with the holes. And, as quoted in a reply before, a good dealer can put them on properly.

On my CS 1966 Jazz, the ashtrays were put on, but luckily I love to play with the ashtrays on. I even have ashtrays put on on my Mark Hoppus...
