Nice find! This is a U.S. Vintage Series serial number, commonly called Fullerton Reissues and these are highly desirable to both collectors and players. These very limited run basses were made at the original Fullerton factory on the original tools and dies by a team that included some of the original pre-CBS employees using original formulas and materials to construct these very rare and hard to find instruments.

This one appears to be a '62 Reissue based on the color and pickguard combination.

The U.S. Vintage Series with the "V" serials are among the best of the best instruments turned out during the CBS era. The only way to tell the date for sure is to check the neck date on the end of the neck, which the seller obviously has if they nailed it to 1981. I've not seen one claimed to be from 1981 before but have seen a few 1982's and usually those were 57/58 Reissues.

The neck dates on these are typically in a six digit format like 04-05-82 for April 5th, 1982 for example. These sell for a large premium over the regular production USA models of the same year. Values will vary depending on condition, where the instrument is located and local market conditions. Easily would bring $1500 in a quick private sale in the condition pictured here in North Carolina. Others in better shape might go as high as $2,500 or even $4,000 if in collector class all-original condition with original factory case and the factory accessories including documentation. The photos put this one in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition and I doubt it would go for much over $2,200 as it has obviously been used.
