I am new here and have some questions. I bought a Fender P bass in 1979. I still have the bass with all original hardware, case and keys, sales literature, factory inspection tag, and stamped validated fender warranty card. It is maple body and maple neck. After playing for a few years I had it professionally refinished in Fender red. I am thinking about selling and wondered if it should be left as is or put back to original. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't it a pity that you can't restore it to "original" finish? But you can't un-paint it. Just about anyone would detect or at least question the originality of the finish. On the other hand there are not that many red 79's around while there are a ton of natural alders. If you want to sell it, I'd sell it as is. You will be obligated to disclose it is refinished either way, so why throw more money at it? I'd just sell it as is.

There were some glamorous looking clear finish Fender bodies but there were some that were absolutely horrid. Think back, maybe you had one of the bodies that looked rather poor in natural finish. Some of the bodies I've seen looked more like old barn wood rather than a fine instrument. It could be you refinished the bass for a good reason.

I doubt it would be worth the cost of having a professional do a refinish on it. I've seen road worn basses go for more than basses with a refinished body.

The body was alright but the clear had cracked really bad within a year.....I took really good care of it but it started to look bad so I had it done in red....
