Does anyone know where to get a replacement neck for a American deluxe precision? I have a 2008 model I bought off of craigslist and have had issues turning the truss rod. I took it to a luthier where he confirmed that I would not be able to make any adjustments without damaging the neck BUT it was in the ideal position at the moment. So basically I can play it "as is" and hope I never have to adjust it again or buy a new neck. I checked warmoth but they do not make necks for the American deluxe p. Also I checked USAGC but I have no idea what the dimensions for my neck are. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks In advance guys..

Look at Warmoth; a well know builder.

http://www.warmoth.com/Bass/Necks/StandardNecks.aspx

You have also Stewart MacDonald

I don't understand how the lutier can't make any adjustment without damaging the neck ?

IMO, he say " ....without damaging the ( truss rod) nut " .
.

Stewart MaDonald sold special tool for adjusting damaged truss rod nut. Your luthier don't have it I think ? It's a "new" tool

Sorry man, I wan't clear on that. Initially the truss rod was hard to turn when trying to make adjustments. I foolishly stripped out the nut with the 3/16 wrench fender provides BUT was able to place a standard 3/16 allen wrench in the nut to fit. Still the truss rod was reluctant to turn to add correct relief. So then I took it to a known luthier in my area to find out what the issue was. He said that the neck was compressed toward the truss rod nut (never heard of that) and if I were to try and adjust any further it I would cause damage to the tr nut or worse because there is no adjustment left. He said it would be too expensive to repair the neck and I would be better off getting a replacement neck or take my chances on not being able to adjust the truss rod. however I live in Texas and the weather can go from one extreme to the other very quickly so I definitely need to be able to make tweaks here and there. I have bought bass necks from warmoth but if you read towards the bottom in the p-bass neck section of their site it says ("P. Bass® Deluxe, J. Bass® Deluxe, P. Bass® Special, P. Bass® "Lyte" Some newer Fender basses feature 22 fret necks. Warmoth does not currently offer necks to fit these basses")..

BR5000, I don't know where you are located but it is possible to find someone to fix it for you. I have a list of repair shops all over the US. Let me know where you are located in a PM and I'll see if I know anyone. Some shops specialize in truss rod work and some don't. Sounds like the luthier you checked with doesn't. So I suggest you find one that does.

Thank's BR5000 I understand now. Too bad for Warmoth.

I have a good experience of guitars tune-up and I found Fender wrench very cheap ; the right tools to strip the nut. I have my own professionnal tools.

BR5000, First I'd call DAN at Dallas Guitar Repair at 214-724-3789. Tell him you need to find someone nearby that specializes in Truss Rod work. They do a wide range of work there, but I don't know if truss rod repair work is one of their specialties.

If Dan turns out to be a dead end, call John Davis at 817-528-6387. He is a service person and instructor in Arlington, TX. He also may know someone who can fix it. He fixes a lot of busted necks on Les Pauls, but I don't know if he does truss rods repair.

Remember you are looking for the best truss rod specialist you can find. In my state there is like ONE shop in Raleigh that I know about that for sure would tackle any truss rod issue.

I think the person who looked at it previously should have told you more specifically what the problem was. Since they didn't, it sort of makes me wonder if they know what the problem actually is, or if it is some problem that they caused.

I'm sure it can be fixed. Perhaps not as cheaply as an el cheapo aftermarket neck, but you really don't have that option.

OK.. I emailed the luthier who initially diagnosed my bass and asked him to further explain the issue my bass neck has. He replied that my truss rod was compressed and will not tighten. My question is how would he know that without having attempted to tighten it?

Stressed? I've heard of the truss rod being "maxed out" meaning it was as tight as you could make it, and it would not tighten further. The solution to that is to remove the truss rod nut, insert a steel spacer (in effect a washer) and replace the nut. The whole purpose of a truss rod is to provide counter stress to the stress from the strings! A second opinion is definitely a good idea.

Good answer brotherdave;
Here a picture from a Dan Erlewine book; Guitar Player Repair Book . page 18
if it so simple , and it is, I don't know why the luthier don't do it ? In this cas my question is ; " is it a luthier " ? Probably not, just a guy able to repair (sometimes) a guitar / bass. Like many amp tech I hear on this forum.
Book from Dan Erlewine is a must if you have some question about any guitar or bass set up. And IMO any guitar/bass player have ,one day a question . This book pay by itself.

Thanks guys for all the responses! I definitely need to get the Dan Erlewine book. With the whole issue going on with my bass I have not played it in about a week. I played it this morning and forgot just how good it plays. The relief right now is perfect and the neck on it is such a joy to play. I would hate it if I was unable to repair it. I am taking it today to Dallas Guitar Services where the luthier there mentioned adding a washer/spacer. Fingers crossed!

The "Dan Erlewine: Guitar Player Repair Book" is worth its weight in gold! Stratele52 gave you good advice.

If you are comfortable with doing your own repairs, he's the man.

If you are not good with doing your own repairs, at least you'll learn enough to know when your "luthier" has a clue or not.
