Double check that serial please. I think you might have one too many numbers there.

Just did a quick check in the Fender Product Support tab at the top of this page and it seems as if the bass was from the 1977-1978 production run IF it is a U.S. made bass. Look at the headstock to see country of origin because that serial number also may apply to a Japan made bass in the mid 1990's.

Once that is determined, Dave can give you an approximate value, but PHOTOS would be helpful because some color combinations are worth more than others.

Okay, I will post a picture when I get home later tonight

It was purchased used in the early 70's so I know its not the 1990 japan model you mentioned....

The colors are the original light wood and black.....I was mistaken on the colors( in my mind I pictured tan and brown but taking a look at it I was wrong)....and it has the original case with red velvet inside....

That serial is probably not earlier than 1977 as PaducahLuke pointed out. It probably was made after July 1 of 1977 and before June 30 of 1978.

A serial is only partial evidence of exact vintage. Irregularities while very rare are proven to exist in minute quantity. In addition to the serial, you have to look other places for markings which requires some disassembly.

If the instrument was for sure purchased in early 70's I'd have to look at other hallmarks to verify exactly when it was made such as neck stampings on the neck butt and in the body cavities and the pot stamping codes. Only then could I say exactly what year it was made.

With only the serial to go by most people will have no choice but to consider it a 1977 model made between July 1, 1977 and June 30, 1978 until proven otherwise.

Since you are posting this on the PRECISION forum I am guessing it is a FENDER PRECISION BASS. I live in North Carolina USA. Here a 1977/1978 Fender Precision bass in EXCELLENT all original condition with very few minor imperfections from new condition would bring possibly as much as $1900 (USD) in a private party to private party sale. That would be only if it looked as good as this one: Image

A dealer might say they are asking $2000 to 2300 for one like that one but would probably take $1800 for it and still make money.

Value will vary depending on where you are. NYC and LA and Nashville will mean a higher price. Economically depressed areas it will sell a little lower. In about any country outside the USA it will have more value since they are rarer.

Now, if selling to a vintage dealer, expect them to offer you about HALF what they think they can sell it for. I'd expect a vintage dealer to offer $1000 to $1150 for it. Now that is all dependent upon condition. It could be worth much, much less. Or it could be worth a little more.

To put this into perspective for you, let's say for example that I have a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible. How much is it worth? Go ahead and tell me please? Of course it is impossible for you to say without SEEING AND DRIVING it. Same goes for an instrument. All I can do is GUESS what it might be worth HERE, but without actually examining it I can not say for sure.

Based on the photos you sent me to review, I'd say it is in fair condition and possibly worth UP TO $800 USD here in North Carolina USA. A dealer would offer you $400 to $500 for it. It could be worth more or less depending on where you are. Might appraise higher but appraisal value and actual sales value are two different things.. It apparently has been exposed to some storage or environmental extremes. The pickguard is cracked, there is significant wear, lots of rust and it is improperly setup (strings installed incorrectly.)

From the photo of the case I could not see the FENDER case logo clearly enough. Does it say in small script "Made In USA" under the large Fender logo with an R inside a circle (trademark registered symbol) over the "R" in the Fender logo script on the case?

The case logo almost looks 1967 to 1971 but can't be sure.

great thanks for the info....I am suprised that its not put together properly, although it hasnt been played in like 20 years, so oh well.

I am out of town to answer the question about the case....I can give it another look on the weekend....

not as much as I thought, thats okay though, its more sentimental anyways.... :)

Sorry but it is sort of rough, especially the cracked pickguard and there is a lot of rust. So it is FAIR condition. Still curious about the case logo features. The string issue is easily corrected. They were installed improperly and probably in a rush. The bare ends should not be protruding out from the tuner shafts like that. They need to be replaced anyway due rust.
