Is anyone able to give me some advice please? I work for a children's charity in North East England and am very excited to have been donated a Sting signature fender bass guitar which Sting himself has kindly signed. It has been shipped over from his agent in New York.

We are putting this in our Charity Auction at our Annual Ball on 11th November 2011 and need to know what reserve to put on it. I would hate to see it go for much less than it is worth. I have searched on the internet and can't find anything like this. I have found the guitar itself for sale at anywhere from £800-£900, but nothing available with Sting's autograph.

I would appreciate any advice at all before we just make a guess at what this would fetch, as all money raised from this item will go directly to help the children in our Centre who have cerebral palsy or dyspraxia.

Thanks, Amanda

Maybe you can start with the price you listed and go from there. The bass is not a top of the line USA model. Usually signatures on guitars are not all that sought after but considering your situation .... I'm thinking the bass will sell at a decent price. Someone may even give you much more than it is realistically worth to help the charity. IMO The bass is not worth 10,000 dollars for instance with a Sting signature but you never know what someone will pay. I myself would only be able to spend 2000. That may be more realistic or somewhere in that vicinity. It's only a guess on my part.

There actually is a STING signed Sting bass for sale on eBay right now. It is eBay item number 300544415503 so you can watch that and see how the auction comes out. The BUY IT NOW price is $1,199 and they are taking "BEST OFFERS" on it. It has a letter of authenticity from a company that I'm pretty sure is an event organizer of celebrity signings and not Sting's actual management. It would be worth watching the outcome though and also you could compare the two signatures. They should be signed in a similar fashion. He's probably signed lots of these for charity auctions and would likely sign all of them in a particular fashion and location.

Actually on a vintage instrument (which this won't be for decades) a signature can often be a markdown but for Sting's actual signature on a Sting model that will certainly add some value. He however is a prolific signer as I've seen plenty of other Sting signed basses around including non-Sting models.

There are ordinarily two problems with autographed instruments. 1. Proving authenticity of the signature can be difficult. I prefer a photo of the star actually signing the instrument with the original owner and a letter from the original owner explaining the circumstances, location and date etc of the signing. Secondarily you can have the autograph authenticated after the fact which can get rather pricey because you have to use an authentication service. 2. In 50 years the instrument will quite possibly still exist, but nobody will know who the person is that signed it or why they wrote on the instrument in the first place because nobody will know who they are in 50 years. I've seen some instruments signed as recently as the past year and nobody knows whose signature is on the instrument!

A Sting signed Sting bass will have value, but I wouldn't expect much over what one costs new and unsigned. They are scarce but apparently not rare since I found one on eBay right off the bat, unless of course that one on eBay is the one you are trying to sell.
