Dave Reeves died in 1981, and the Hiwatt name has been up for grabs since. Various companies used the trademark, I think, but the amps weren't the same, so people stopped using them. Mark Huss has all the skinny here: http://hiwatt.org/.

Some say the new UK kit is getting good again - people like Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys use it - if their website (link on Mark's home page) is to be believed they've gone back to the original designs and materials by and large, but with modern gain stages so you don't have to use pedals as much as people did in the old days. Or so they say! Expensive, though - way out of my league - bass gear £2,000+ for a head (200W or 400W) - £1000+ for a 410. <sharp intake of breath> They don't make the big old 2x15s any more, but they do make a monstrous all in one 1000W bi-amp-able 4x10+1x15. This will set you back £1,670.65. I like the 65p. There's no weight given, they just say "it isn't exactly light" - no s**t, Sherlock?

Thanks for that great resource!

I don't remember any bass players who used them, but I know a lot of good bands back in the day did and I had respect for them.

In todays world of serious PA and monitor gear, there's something to be said for the gain and master volume or as you call it modern gain stages.

Im half deaf from too many years in front of the walls of Marshalls. :)

I need to talk to SK about strings to change out on the American Special Precision Bass. I see a lot of bass players on this Fender Forum are always saying change the strings on the bass.

I will have to buy amplifier I guess some time. It is very hard to hear the bass as I play it without an amplifier to give it a louder sound. I may have to go back to the store to look at them again.

Most of us find an amplifier very useful. Why, only the other night I was practising late without my bass plugged-in, and the footsteps of a passing spider quite drowned out my fingerstyle...

Very good, I get it now. I will have to get the amplifier some time soon. Everyone is telling me to not use any other type of amplifier for my Fender American Special Precision Bass than a bass amplifier. So I guess the Fender Twin Reverb amplifier is off of the list of possible amplifiers. I may have to find a bass amplifier that is light enough to get home on the bus with too.

SK has me away from buying the Fender Twin Reverb amplifier for my Fender American Special Precision Bass. I have to start looking at the bass amplifiers now.
