I forgot who posted it but I want my next bass to be "telepathic". Maybe it will know me when I see it and we can have a special bond. Cool...... I like it.

I want a telepathic Tele bass. I used to have a 68 but no more. We never bonded untill after I sold it and was sorry I did. Sold it that is. :D

Don't feel too bad.
I had a 72 American fretless P-bass that I sold.
I still regret it.

I remember only too well a certain journey many years ago, right across London on the Underground, all by myself with a Vox AC30.

(No, that wasn't a bass amp either - I was playing lead at the time...)

If you don't mind my asking, what year did you get the Vox?

I started out playing lead in my first 2 bands,
but once I discovered the bass, I didn't want to go back.

Since I played both guitar and drums, bass was the obvious middle ground. Besides, bass is what makes the girls' hips sway. :)

And back in those days, you could get into a working band very easily if you played bass.

If I remember rightly, it was '68 or '69. I was kind of shifting around between bass and lead, according to who was around. I had a Viking 50 (v early SS amp) that sounded terrible with the Strat I was using, so I did the decent thing and bought this AC30. Good price, good condition - but that day there was no-one to drive me home with it, so... all the way from Ealing Broadway to Highgate Village on the Tube. Must have weighed at least 80lbs. Not reassuring, getting that up and down escalators

Er, probably not

Those Celestion Alnico Blue speakers were ridiculously heavy, though. Even the current AC30 CC2X, with modern transformers, weighs 76lbs! But if I were to go back to playing lead full-time, and could afford it, there's no amp I'd rather have behind me. No, not even a Blackstar, mtnclimber

Hi PVTele. I do not think I would use a Blackstar if I were you. SKcoppertele told me that the Blackstar is not a good amplifier to use. My friend PKBassman never heard of a Blackstar. I heard them in the store but the Fender people here say not to go with one.

You really should check out that Line6 model that brotherdave and pvtele were talking about. I've never tried one, but Ive read good things about them and they come recommended by some pretty respectable players here.

How come I never hear any Brits talking about all that WEM gear I used to see out there?

I have to talk to SKcoppertele about this Fender Twin Reverb. I still might have to buy one. It just sounds so good when I hear them played in the store. The bus home will be the problem 2 transfers to get it home from the store.

Ah, Watkins Electric Music! After the weird-looking but wonderful sounding Dominator of around 1960 they never did produce a decent guitar or bass amp. The ones I tried in the late 60s were uniformly horrid, and quite expensive. The PAs, though, were incredible, but after rigging a 5000W PA  for the there-but-for-the-grace-of-God Altamont-like Grangemouth Festival in '73, Charlie Watkins gave up on amplification and went back to producing his Copicat echo unit, and latterly amps and MIDI boxes for accordion. (Charlie plays accordion, and can't play guitar  )

And mtnclimber, you'd better buy a Telecaster to go with that Twin Reverb, and see if you can persuade some passing girl to help you with the bus transfers. You never know, it might be the start of a beautiful friendship 8)

The only thing I know about WEMs is that I saw Pink Floyd using them a million years ago and they sounded good.
Today I have learned what WEM actually stands for.
Thanks PVT!

Hey, Id buy a Tele if a girl came with it! :)

I wonder if that was Floyd's big WEM PA? I do know the Floyd used one (the Who, too) in the early 70s, but I think their backline was mostly Hiwatt heads with WEM cabs. Watkins always could build cabs - it was the heads that were brittle-sounding and prone to overheating. But Hiwatt heads were wonderful, if you were playing places where you could open them up. The power-stage distortion came in about 85W, and just got better, all the way up. They were supposed to be 100W, but you needed 2 4x12s to get it all out - and then they just sounded sublime :D

I've only played with 2 guitarists that cranked their 100W Marshalls to 11 without the benefit of a Ton Sholtz Power-Soak or some similar device, and that's why I needed the SVT in those days before we learned the wisdom of small amps with large PAs and monitors. :)

I used to see a lot of HiWatts around in the old days, but not so much by the 80s... Are they still around?

When I first started touring, you were hard pressed to beat a Sunn or Ampeg. :)

And maybe your right about Pink Floyd using the WEM cabs as opposed to the amps... Ill have to pay more attention.
