That's even worse than me carrying a Selmer T&B 100 + Goliath cab to & from an upstairs rehearsal room, back in the day. It's no wonder we have back problems these days.

Not familiar with either one of those.
If they are worse than those Ampeg refrigerators, you have my sympathy and respect. :)

Yes, you're right, Paul. It's the speakers that are the real limiting factor. The Selmer T&B 50 and 100W amps were supposed to be equally good for bass and lead. They weren't - they were stunning bass amps, but merely adequate for lead. But people often used them for PA, as unusually for their day they had 2 speaker outs.

On the subject of Selmer, that's a brilliant site. I've spent many nostalgic times looking through that one!

PK, the Goliath cabs (1x18 + 1x12) probably weighed around the same as an Ampeg 8x10, and certainly a lot more than the custom-made 100W 4x10 (Fane drivers) I often used. We didn't tend to weigh stuff in those days, probably on the grounds we didn't want to know if we were overloading the van

The T&B 100 was a big, heavy 4xEL34 valve head in a metal casing with rack-type chrome handles and an odd but very cool 2 channel control layout. http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/selmer/amps/sel16.html Marvellous sound - how I wish I had one today!

We were very much British Blues going on towards prog rock - we'd have looked just right hanging out on the Mayall/Clapton Beano cover

The Blackstar was loud too. I did not see any Ampeg or Acoustic there.

So it sounds like you want a smaller bass amp.

Maybe you should check out the Line6 that PVTele and brotherdave recommend.

They are both knowledgeable and experienced from what Ive read here over the last year.

I still find myself listening to stuff from that era time and again. There was so much interesting stuff being done in the time immediately before psychedelia swept everything else aside in a torrent of acid and Winnie the Pooh  Remember the Yardbirds?

Yes, I do!
Both Page and Clapton went trough them.

So you don't like Cream or Jack Bruce?

Oh, yes - Cream did some fantastic stuff. Jack Bruce is one of the bass players who along with Noel Redding and The Ox changed everything - amazing player!

And it'd be hypocritical of me not to admit to liking Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Can, the Dead, Iron Butterfly, Country Joe and who knows who else from that era. I went from blues to psychedelia to krautrock and back again, and in a sense I'm still wandering, with my own Eremos recordings, blues, and modern worship music

Thanks!!

Actually if I had to pick just one bass player, for his sound and his groove, I think it'd have to be Harvey Brooks. And I love John McVie's solidity and humility, especially when you think of the sheer chops he demonstrated from time to time in Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac. And Greg Lake. Hmm. The list goes on

Of the young 'uns, I like listening to Tal Wilkenfeld as well as anyone. Her stuff with Jeff Beck's just a delight 8)

Yes, the UK in the 60s and 70s was an amazing place to be. I don't think any of us realised then just what we were all a part of...

Is that her name?
I saw her on a Rock And Roll Hall of Fame DVD with Jeff Beck.
I had no idea who she was, but she impressed me to the point that I remember her.

Yeah, she plays with Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, among others. No ambition or confidence, then

Hi Fender friends. I went back to the store today. The store still had the Fender American Special Precision. I tried it in a amplifier and it sounded good. The bass cost a lot more than I thought I was going to spend. It comes with a nice gig bag they called it in the store. I may have to wait to see what amplifier I can buy now. There was a nice Fender amplifier there. Two speakers in it. Not the one I played it through. They had me try it in the Fender Ramble amplifier with one speaker. I think I want to get the one Fender amplifier with two speakers.

I got the bass home ok. That Amplifier might be hard getting it home on the bus. I have to transfer two times to get home from the store on the bus. That Twin Reverb I think will work good with the two speakers. I might get that Fender instead of the Fender Ramble with the one speaker.

Again, mtnclimber, the Fender Twin Reverb is a guitar amp, not a bass amp. The Fender Rumble Series (there are several, from 15W up to 350W, combos and head/cab models) are real bass amps, designed for the job - and very good value they are too. There are different opinions about how much power you're likely to need just starting out, but the 75W model is a good balance of cost, weight, and sufficient volume for rehearsals and even small gigs.

I've not tried the American Special basses myself, but if the reviews are anything to go by, they're excellent, a good choice that will last, and won't need replacing once you're a more confident player.

I forgot who posted it but I want my next bass to be "telepathic". Maybe it will know me when I see it and we can have a special bond. Cool...... I like it.

I want a telepathic Tele bass. I used to have a 68 but no more. We never bonded untill after I sold it and was sorry I did. Sold it that is. :D

So what are you playing your bass through at the moment?

As the others have said, the Twin is not a good choice for a bass....
You said they had a Fender Rumbles there, how did that sound to you?

By the way, it will not be fun to transport an amplifier on the bus...
Better bring a friend...

Or maybe go with a small Line6.
