For what it's worth, I've always found passive (i.e. no battery, only one tone control) circuits to produce a more open, natural, growly tone, with (and this not everyone may agree with) a more articulate and defined bottom end. But there's less tonal variation, at least electronically, than with an active (battery, usually 2 or 3 band EQ (tone controls)) bass. There's a LOT of tonal variation possible with a simple passive P-Bass, with just the one volume and one tone control, but most of it has to come from your fingers

Oh, and if you choose an active bass, make sure your amp has a separate "active" input jack, or a little button marked "pad" or "-10dB" or something, next to the input jack - otherwise you may overload your amp's preamp stage and cause unwanted distortion or clipping, which is bad for your sound and physically bad for your speaker(s).

The Blackstar was loud too. I did not see any Ampeg or Acoustic there.

Blackstar amps are indeed loud, and lovely. But Blackstar don't make bass amps, only guitar amps, as SK says. You need a specialised bass amp. Fender make a number of excellent ones, as do Line6, Marshall, MarkBass, Trace Elliot, Ashdown and quite a number of others. Look on a good music dealer's website under "bass amps".

Is there no love for Ampeg, Carvin, Hartke or old Acoustics? :D

Oh, definitely, especially Ampeg :D But you'd already mentioned a couple of those  (And I don't like Hartke, at least the ones I've tried - too brittle  )

They're very brite, but they can be toned down with the right strings, pickups and EQ settings.
Although nothing beats an old tube Ampeg or old Acoustic.

Amen to that

(Though I have to say Line6's modelling of the old Ampegs doesn't sound bad at all...)

Never tried one, but I've seen a few of the people here have and had good things to say about them.

Although I'm not very impressed with their guitar amps from the few guitarists I've played with recently.

I recently bought a Line6 Studio 110, and I'm delighted with it, really blown away.

Their guitar amps are more variable, I think, but Pete Harris (British blues guitarist and band leader) uses one, and sounds very good indeed through it.

Don't know Pete Harris, I'll have to look him up on Google.

Brother Dave mentioned that amp also.
I'm getting old and don't gig like I used to,
maybe I should check it out.

Certainly a lot easier to lug around than an SVT - or even a B15

I've lugged an SVT with 2 8X10 cabs before the band got roadies.
I no longer have roadies, nor do I have a back anymore.

The Pete Harris Blues Band: http://www.peteharrisblues.com/home.htm

They played the finale gig for the Swanage Blues Festival last week - a good time was had by all!

2 8x10's is just greedy  No wonder you have no back left... That's even worse than me carrying a Selmer T&B 100 + Goliath cab to & from an upstairs rehearsal room, back in the day. It's no wonder we have back problems these days.
