I have just recently purchased a used 08 MIA deluxe precision. Upon my initial setup I noticed that the truss rod is really stiff and almost impossible to move without fear of damaging the neck. I took advice from a friend and used a bit of lithium grease to free it up and it some what worked as I moved it just enough to make the desired adjustment. I have been on a strings kick lately and moved to a heavier gauge string. This however caused a need for adjustment. As before with the strings loosened the truss rod was reluctant to move. This time being a little to impatient I accidentaly stripped out the 3/16 nut using the long fender 3/16 wrench. Once I calmed down, I took the neck off and placed a regular 3/16 allen wrench in the nut and attempted to loosen the truss. This worked but it is still requires more force than I would like to give for a 1/4 turn adjustment . I have not had it looked at by a luthier of any kind as I live quite a ways from one. Also let me say that I am very competent maintaining and adjusting my basses but have just never experienced this before. Does anyone know if this would be covered under warranty being used or have any tips to remedy my problem. Thanks in advance!

No gerase or oil in the truss rod nut , this will damage the wood, Also Fender allen wrench is IMO too cheap to use, you'll damage your nut . You have to buy some good American made or high quality import allen wrench that fit TIGHT

Yes truss rod could be hard to turn some time , slack strings , and play gently with the nut , unscrew and screw many time ; 1 / 10 turn ,
Also the the wood plug on the truss nut hole is sometimes glued too close to the nut making hard to turn,

Be carefull ,take your time , go slowly

Oui! Dan Erlewine's books are very good.

Also, if you hear the rod squeak, stop turning it!

Rod squeek could be normal , nut push the wood plug or dust/glue on the nut. Be very carefull and slowly, screw / unscrew, tthe nut will clean itself.

Dan Erlewine was the guy whos book told me not to keep going if it squeaks... I had a bass once where it squeaked and the neck still wasn't straight, but I was too chicken to give it another eighth of a crank... lol!
