The only long term issue is neck stability. The USA's have Posiflex™ Graphite Neck Support Rods.

Neck stability is usually only issue with a jazz bass, but with a p-bass, I don't think it would to much to worry about. Otherwise, that is what a warranty is for.

The Roger Waters P-Bass is an interesting model. One of the most common mods on a P-Bass is installing a Seymour Duncan SPB3 and it comes with one. The brass nut is a nice feature too. Fender stamped tuners are always desirable. I've heard of some rough fret ends on more than one of these so be sure to check that. Also make sure the frets really are medium jumbos as I have seen a report that in at least one instance they appeared to be smaller than other medium jumbo frets. The all black will be hard to keep clean.

And basically YES, you are worried about nothing. Buy new and save your receipt.

I have a MIM Road Worn P-Bass and love it. I would expect it to last forever. That Roger Waters P looks like a great bass, the QP pickup is a great mod to come stock. If the neck is straight, you should be set for years.

Of all the recent Mexican production Fenders I have seen, I am pretty impressed. The only place I can fault them is in the little things - a somewhat proud fret, a bit of polish that didn't get cleaned off, a slightly larger than normal neck to body gap, etc.

I'd definitely consider one. They aren't the poor relations that they once were.

I am no embassoder of Mex made basses but must say that they have gotten better in quality the last 5 or so years,One good thing on your side is the fact that MIM ARTIST models are consistantly made well while the MIM standard model is a crap shoot at times and the possibility of shopping a few different places to find one that stands out is still a reality.
I have played 3 of the R.Waters basses and they were very consistant in quality, the frets were dressed well and even w/neck edge, the brass nut was nicely cut and most of all the neck was pretty sweet on all of them, that W-I-D-E 70s style neck was D'Lish,I had 2 of the M.Dirnt MIM p-bass and loved them and never once had to adjust the trus-rod aside from initial set-up.
My biggest gripe with MIM's is neck stability but when dealing w/p-bass necks its not that previlant an issue as if dealing with a thinner jazzbass sized neck.
The Waters bass is 799.00$ or so and from what I hear they are better than the American SPECIAL model, there are a bunch of basses in that price range that are really good,it boils down to what your needs are,There are plenty of US standard models on sale all the time for close to that price, shop around something will give.

All I can say is that mine is great. I've had no trouble with my MIM p-bass. None of the issues that I was warned about are present. It's a great buy.

Estimado mexicano Luthier, gracias por el gran bajo. ¡Es impresionante!

I have owned three MIM Fenders: a Standard Jazz Fretless that I traded off, a Classic '50s, and an FSR ash P. The only issue has been a small bit of finish that chipped off the area around the neck pocket (to be fair, I swapped out necks about four times on it). No other problems, and the Classic '50s is the best bang for the buck I know about. I came into a little money a couple of years ago and got an AV '57 P to replace the Classic '50s. The fretless Jazz had a particularly nice finish in Blue Agave. A lady friend who cares nothing about basses told me it was classy looking.

The one I've had the longest is five years old; the Jazz was about 12 years old when I got it. No problems with any of them.

I just pulled out the natural ash P and adjusted the action and tweaked the truss rod, and it's good to go. I'll be taking it to a practice and leaving it there so I don't have to tote a bass back and forth.

I'd buy another, if I didn't already my perfect bass in my AV '57.

thanks guy's I already have a 2008 USA s/b p bass but am frighted to take it out the case so it stays in an immaculate state (stupid hey?).

I love it, neck is straight, action perfect, has that tapper wound E which I have broken on previouse USA p's. Ive seen on some of them now they look like standard 45's with no taper wound. If I were to change the strings on my P. I dont want to screw about with the neck but i dont want a taper wound E. I would also like the strings to contniue being through the body. Is this possible? if so what strings to get?

I have been away from gigging for about 5 years now but wouldnt mind playing again.

Thanks

Rob

Not at all, haha. Sometimes I feel the same about my '51RI, and that's only cause its the bass I paid the most for. So I know the feeling of wanting it to be in a clean, almost untouched condition. :p

Personally I would recommend flat wounds as they last longer, however they may not be what you're looking for. Flats have that old school P-Bass thump and I don't know if you like a more modern sounding bass. Just about any type of round wound string works well through the body (unless stated). If you're looking for flats, I'd recommend Fender 9050 flats or D'Addario Chromes, if only because they're the only strings I've tried on a string through body, so I know that they won't cause much problems. La Bella flats won't be as merciful though.

In the end its all really up to you. Hope this helps.

To answer your initial question, yes I do believe that Mexican basses will last as they've been considerably good in quality. I can't honestly claim to have had a bad experience as I own a more recent Mexican Standard P-Bass (09 to be exact, if that helps) and haven't seen any flaws. In some you may have to consider changing the tuners as they could feel cheap, but not all times. I've considered a Roger Waters P, and still consider it. It looks and sounds great (based on videos and photos). I've tried the neck as I bought it separately online and its just beautiful. I can only imagine that the full thing is one of the top basses made in Mexico.
