Hello fellers!! I have been posting in the other forums on here for a few years, had to recently reset my account, but I am back - However, back as a bass player! lol

Story is, I have been playing guitar for over 20 years - been teaching for a lot of those - recently was asked to give a few kids bass lessons, just the basic stuff, as I am not a bass player - so, it became very interesting, and I really have been enjoying it, so yesterday, I went and bought a new Am Std P bass - its my new baby - I own over 20 Fenders, and this is my first bass - love at first sight - rosewood neck, 3 tone sunburst, with the tortoise pickguard -

I am looking for some advice on a bass rig - My buddy is letting me use his SWR working pro 15 right now - its pretty cool, but I want something of my own - Wanting to go with a 4x10 cab and a 1x15 cab - just not real savy on bass gear - any advice will be appreciated!

Welcome to the lowend :)
What kind of money are you looking to get. All the decent brand in full stack will cost you $1000 or better. Combos will cost less. I'm a Hartke guy, with the LH5500 410xl and 115 xl will cost you $650+$450+$350. I have the 210 instead the 410. I don't gig anymore tho so it doesn't matter to me...it's still too loud for my house :D
Will you gig the bass or just wanting a decent amp? Cuz if just to have an amp, try out some of the combos out there. The only effects I use is the SansAmp VT Bass, not the Deluxe, the basic $169 one. I'm thinking I can get away with a combo with it. But my mini full stack is left over from my gigging years.

Good luck trying them out, don't stress, make it fun, the stressful part is the haggling, but that comes at the end when you find the one you want.

Good tips from PowerJazzBass...

Just like to add that if you have a Fender dealer nearby that has a Fender Rumble 350-210 Combo amp in stock, TEST IT... you may come away with that amp as your one and only.

Welcome to the Fellowship of the Low End! Anyway if you like SWR there is no reason not to stick with that. They make some great gear! Just stay away from the LA series. Have a friend that has one and it is really not that great. The Workingman's series though is good for gigging!

Hartke stacks for the money is really popular. The Fender Rumble 350 combo with 2x10's is a real nice combo but too heavy for me to move by myself for every rehearsal and gig. It sounds KILLER though, no doubt about it!

I'm not sure what you are going to use the new rig for but a lot of what to get depends on the purpose. By the sound of things, with a 1x15 and a 4x10 shopping list it sounds like you might be wanting to gig out. If so, some mainline makers' 4x10 and 1x15's don't match up well power capacity wise. For example some 1x15's only take 200 watts but the 4x10 will take up to 600 watts. That is sort of restricting your amp power to say 400 watts at 4 Ohms. I'm saying this because I'm in pretty much the same situation with a 2x10 that is rated at 700 watts and a 1x15 rated at 400 watts.

I love the sound of 15's myself! I used to have a pair of Ampeg 2x15 cabs when most people were using a single 8x10. I thought it sounded much richer. More vintage. Heavy as heck though. Fortunately then I had a 57 Chevy panel truck to move it all in.

Since I love 15's so much I hold down the power just a tad to get a more vintage sound. There is more of a power trade off though with most mainline 1x15's. So shop carefully if you decide for sure to use a 1x15. You can get 400 watt 1x15 3 way cabs from Avatar, which only sells online. Some people these days are using 2x12's instead of 1x15's as they can take far more power, the 2x12 cabs themselves are about the same size and sound very satisfying, especially for 5 string players. I would not exclude a 2x12 from consideration if you feel you have to have a 4x10 as it would match up better power-capacity-wise and you could safely use a more powerful amp. Usually if you are going to use a 1x15 then a 2x10 seems to match up better and gives a more balanced sound.

I also look for cabs that are FRONT PORTED. They seem to sound more vintage to me. If it isn't front ported, I pass.

This can get long-winded. In short, the gig will spell it out.

What kind of sound(s) do you like within the scope of the passive Fender P-bass?

Tone? Output? Weight? Budget?

Personally I like the sound of a directly recorded bass within a controlled environment with really clean gear...AKA: A studio bass tone. Consequently I dig hi quality hi-fi rigs that are straight forward. Lots of buttons and whistles don't make it sound better, simple well-made guts gets the tone of the instrument across. Keeping in mind every piece of gear from mixing desk to the monitors adds color, the least amount of alterations the rig adds the better.

The new Fender Rumble looks like low-mid priced straight forward hi-fi rig(s). Broken into components seems to keep the weight down and offer more options. I have read some nice things about them, other than the video clips I personally have not heard them. The 2x8 and the 1x12 seems to be in your idea of rig, though slightly smaller, but possibly tighter & quicker.

Bottom line, your ears and taste along with needs will dictate the end result. It doesn't hurt that you have benchmark for a bass. A good measurement you’re on the right track, it should take but a moment to get the sound you dig with a Fender P-bass. Other than some minor tweaks (likely on the gig), if have to keep dialing and searching for a desired sound, it probably isn't a good match. A p-bass gets an excellent tone with a volume and tone control; you don't need much in eq. alterations to amplify its beautiful simplicity. :D

I appreciate the advice my friends!

Brotherdave, thats one of the things thats had me confused as I have been researching, is how different cabs can handle "X" amount of watts, and how they vary, also with the heads

Im going tomorrow to check out several amps at a buddy of mines shop - he has all the Rumble stuff, and SWR, and some Hartke -

More than likely, at this point, im probably going to go with a combo, as I dont plan on playing Shea Stadium, at least not this year! ;)

From reading the posts here, I have learned there are several combos available that would be suitable for jamming at the house, or with a band, even able to gig with it!

I like to keep it simple, not really into all the EQ stuff - Im the same with guitars - I plug my strats, or my Gibson 335 right into my old Marshall heads and turn it lose -not really into all the pedals and $@!& - just a wah! Thats pretty much how I see my bass playing going, an amp, bass, and a cord!!!

Thanks again for all the kind words of advice!!

So far, im enjoying the Low End!!!

I mentioned that possibility in post # 3 in this thread. Very glad that you chose the Rumble 350-210. It will give you the flexibility to adapt to many different bass sounds for your gigs and will give you many years of high quality performance.

You will enjoy the 'Overdrive' module settings as well as the 'Wave Shape' controls for 'punch ' and 'scoop'. Experiment a little. There is a very good 'settings' section in your owner's manual for various genre settings for the controls as a starting point.

If you are playing a larger room with a quality PA system, the Rumble 350 series has a convenient line out system to custom tailor your amp output into the venue mixer board.

Congratulations !!

Yep, you were right on the money Luke - Not only for the cash was it the better deal, but the sound quality really impressed me - I tried out a few Hartke's, and a couple SWR's - I even looked at the Fender Rumble Heads, with the 2x8 and 1x12 cabs - They were nice, but for a few bucks more than just the head alone cost, I got the combo - Money isnt really an option, but I like to make reasonable purchases I suppose, that way I can blow money on other guitars, lol!!

I honestly couldnt justify the additional funds for the head and cabs, when everything I really needed was in this kick $@! sounding combo - I was really impressed with the sounds of two 10" speakers - I guess being new to the "Low End" I was under the impression to get a good bass sound, you needed the big 15's and such, but was quickly shown that isnt the case -

Yes, I was having some fun with the "gain" channel last night - its a pretty cool amp - Its actually not too bad as far as weight and portability goes, especially with the casters - but ill tell ya what, that thing was a $@!&* getting it out of my car in that box!! lol - I dont know how that dude got it in there so tight - Once I finally got it out of my car, I just popped the box open right there on my patio and unpacked it and brought it inside - lol

Again, I appreciate the advice from everyone - Im sure more questions will be coming soon!

Have a great weekend friends!!

Yep the Rumble 2x10 350 watt combo does sound amazing. It is just too heavy for me personally.

Ill tell ya what BrotherDave - once you get it out of the box and on wheels, it isnt bad - it is still a little heavy, no doubt about that - but I torqued the hell out of my elbow trying to get that damn box out of the back seat of my car!! I dont plan on hauling it around that much, or id definitely went for something lighter!!!
