I'm looking for a new set of strings for a mexican P bass and totally confused by scale lengths and frets and guages etc. My bass has seriel number MZ7005251. It has 20 frets. I measured from the nut to the bridge, which is 34 inches. Which are the recommended round wound strings and what scale length is this bass classed as?

Thanks.

Just take it to the music store and ask for recommendations on strings.

Ok, just figured out that MZ7 means it was made in 2007, but can't find a manual on it.

Usually, strings are longer than needed. Just put them on and crop them

Rather than tell you to take a shortcut - the PBass is a long scale [34 inch] instrument.

This can explain all the scale lengths rather concisely: www.sweetwater.com/shop/bass-guitars/ba ... -guide.php

Just discovered that the correct way to measure a bass string is from where the string crosses the nut to the ball end. Mine are 35 and 1/4 inch, which puts them in the long scale category as far as Daddario range is concerned.

Here is the current manual and it should cover the 2007 Bass models -

Found this online:

Determine the Scale of your bass

Step 1. Mark the lowest gauge string at the nut with a marker.

Step 2. Remove the string and measure from the mark to the inner edge of the ball end & refer below.

Up to 32" D'Addario Short Scale

32"-34" D'Addario Medium Scale

34" - 36" D'Addario Long Scale

36" - 38" D'Addario Extra Long Scale

Bass String Scale Length Explained - The scale length of a bass string is from ballend to where the string crosses the top nut. It is a fairly common mistake to measure the actual bass guitar rather than the strings before getting some new bass strings. But you actually need to measure the old strings in inches from ballend to nut to get the correct scale length for your new strings. This is due to the fact that all basses are different (some basses are strung through the body which can add 2 inches to the length of string you would need).

Yes it is long scale. Any medium or light gauge strings for long scale bass should work. Gauge refers to DIAMETER not length. I'd go no heavier than medium gauge, which is about what came on it. Diameters would be close to .045", .065", .085", .105". I would not go bigger than that because that would require filing the nut slots.

What brand to get depends on personal tonal preference. You can ask 50 bass players about what string to use and get 50 different answers. I'd suggest seeking the help of someone locally to get it set up with new strings. But if you want to do it yourself first read these guides as they have useful information:
http://www.fender.com/support/articles/bass-guitar-setup-guide
http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html
http://www.tunemybass.com/bass_setup/

Of the three, the second link seems to be the clearest to me.

The original Fender manual didn't have a lot of information about setting them up anyway, so don't worry about it.

Nice one. Thanks for the info. Just ordered a set of Fender 250 Nickel Plated Super Bass Strings (40-100/45-100/45-105)45-105 from Amazon.

Been a guitarist for over 40 years and just taken up bass (10 months) really enjoying it. I think setting it up will not be a prob for me, just got my head in a whizz with all the bass string business.....
